Posted - 10/23/2008 : 7:18:01 PM I have a mini-obsession with the history of failed sports leagues. It's far more extensive than most sports fans are aware, with some leagues collapsing this decade before a single game was played (the AAFL and UNGL), others dying in infancy (the XFL and WUSA), and a couple more leagues due to fail in the next few years (the embryonic UFL and reboots of the USFL and WUSA, and the extant AFL). It seems that Jabootu has a hand in leagues that stink up the joint, leagues that collapse either because of mismanagement right off the bat or because the league was an idea that was lousy to begin with. And then there was the glorious failure of the original USFL, a Greek tragedy that simple Didn't Have To End This Way. I miss it.
Was anybody a fan of any of these erstwhile leagues? |

Posted - 12/16/2008 : 6:01:40 PM Yup. And I don't believe the league will ever play another game. It's never happened in sports history that a league has suspended operations for a full season and returned (the NHL lockout wound up cancelling the season's games, but front-office operations continued, and folks still got paid).
I'm morbidly giggling at "pending approval of the players' union." Like the union's opinion matters if owners aren't willing to field teams.
The UFL has got to be lovin' this. It couldn't come at a better time for them.
afl2 is still good to go for 2009, though. Proof positive that it wasn't the recession that killed the AFL, it was the over-budget spending of Jon Bon Jovi, Jerry Jones, John Elway, et al. |

Posted - 12/16/2008 : 11:36:04 AM It does look like arena football has kicked it in for at least this season.

Posted - 12/10/2008 : 6:14:19 PM I knew the Arena League was in trouble, but I didn't know it would get this bad this quickly:
