Requiem For a Dream is perfect. But also Irréversible (courtesy of the the ridiculous Gaspar Noé) needs a hearty mention.

I certainly agree about 1984.

I don't think OLD YELLER has a sad ending. Old Yeller saves Mama and Lisbeth and Little Arliss from the rabid wolf, gets rabies himself and has to be shot, but in the end, Travis has Old Yeller's puppy.

I thought that The Descent was pretty damned bleak and depressing for a mainstream movie, particularly if you saw the original cut. Definitely well made, though, and I'd still recommend it to people.

Gets me every time.

First and Last King Kong's are pretty painful too.

Brazil isn't nearly as big of a bummer as some of the others on the list. Requiem for a Dream, definitely.

Happiness, Seven, and Requiem for a Dream definitely come to mind.

The original, unAmericanized Gojira would need to be on there.
An old "end of the world via nuclear war" movie or miniseries I can't quite recall...might have been called something like "Testament"? I just remember being pretty miserable while watching it in my youth.
Also Pan's Labyrinth. Goddamn that thing was nigh-relentless in its bleakness and misery.

I've not seen either film in it's entirety (shame on me!), but how about GRAPES OF WRATH and OF MICE & MEN?

UP THE DOWN STAIRCASE is, I think, supposed to be a kind of "uplifting" film (I do like it a lot), but it does come across to me like the characters are trapped in some endless purgatory.

Maybe I'm in the minority, but I prefer the 1992 version of Mice, with John Malkovich and Gary Sinise, to the older one.

A Midnight Clear is another good choice.

Disney had a TV-movie that they decided to release to theaters in '81 called Amy. If I remember it right, it fell victim to quite a few TV-movie-isms, but was pretty good overall. And it had a dark ending, VERY surprising for a G-rated Disney flick.

There are not enough European films in the list yet. And we are the masters of misery!

Anyway, I have a few contenders: Sophie's choice, Three colors: Blue, De Palma's Blow Out and Chinatown.

De Palma's Chinatown?? Is this new?? *g*

Wow, Das Boot. Now there's an exercise in nihilism, for sure... it's that ending...
