I got this yesterday and played a little bit to see what it's like. This had been mentioned on this board some months ago and looks like a winner. It's kind of like those SIM and TYCOON games. Here's a link: http://movies.lionhead.com/ |

I've heard generally good things about the game. Not being much of a gamer (too easily distracted) I can't confirm them myself, but I'm sure my son will--he's getting the game for Christmas.
From what I hear, you can actually make your own movies and post them online. |

Eh, it's okay... It just gets a little narrow what with the pre-selected scenes and all... But if you ever wanted a zombie/ninja romance movie...

Wow, it sounds like the software Spielberg used to make all his movies of the last twenty years. Dreamworks must be really hard up for cash if they released it to the public.... |

| I've been playing it for awhile, and like it quite a bit. The scenes are pre-selected, however they are plentiful. Plus, as the game progresses, you get more props, costumes, sets, and tools to work with. I've mostly played the "mogul" portion, and haven't gotten to the nitty gritty of movie making, but I have seen a couple examples online that are actually somewhat entertaining. I'd recommend it. |

Okay, one thing I haven't mentionned before, but I know from playing AND reading from other's people experiences with the game :
-Your 'Stars' (actors and directors) are notoriously hard to please. They're always throwing tantrums, drinking or eating rather than making movies. They're whiny, overpaid stresspots. Insert joke about veracity and true-to-life-ness here.
-Seems that there's a 'feature' that limits the number of employees you can have at once. However, it seems that this MAX EMPLOYEE TOTAL doesn't decrease whenever your 'Stars' and staff decrease, through firing or retirement. Meaning that all too often, late in the game you'll run out of employees with no one to replace them. Luckily, a few third party solutions have been made for this, including a fan-made patch that sets your employee to such a ridiculous level that a horde of applicants arrive, and as long as you hire frugally you'll always have an interminable line of hopefuls ready.

I love The Movies, but for me, it's a fair-to-middling "Tycoon" game and a tremendous "movie making" program.
The "game" part has a lot of little annoyances, many of which to me boil down to its lack (unique among any similar games I have) of a "clock speed setting." You can pause the game, but you can't "slow down time." And pretty much all you can do while paused is construction. So much of the game is spent frantically running around trying to do the necessary micromanagement. Micromanagement per se, I don't mind, but give me time to ponder it!
Fortunately, there's a simple modification that will "unlock" everything in the game, when playing in Sandbox mode, and that lets you craft movies at your leisure. And there's a lot of neat stuff you can do.
If anyone's interested, here are links to my online "studio," and my currently uploaded movies. My studio has more than a little touch of Jabootu to it....

I've also got a few higher-resolution versions and movies I no longer have space for on The Movies Online here: http://video.google.com/videosearch?q=embiggened&page=1&lv=1 |

I'm started a game (while trying variations) just to learn, but now I'm so into it that I'm working on my "blockbuster": Cheerleader Commandos, a combination of "Red Dawn" and "Commando Girls".
HINT: Use some of your Maintinance Crew early in the game (When your pictures are crap anyway) as extras so they will have the experience for later, big budget productions. |

| Bear in mind that trying to do a major project (i.e., more than about 12 scenes maximum) while in game mode is a Very Bad Idea. I've actually seen some surprisingly decent movies made under gameplay restrictions, but in general, you need to use sandbox mode for any sort of ambitious project. |
