The obscure-but-memorable 1973 horror film "The Mutations" is finally available for home video. Had its DVD release a week or so ago. I don't think it was EVER out for VHS. Starring Donald Pleasance and Tom Baker and the Venus Flytrap Man.

It has mysteriously been concealed under the new title of "The Freakmaker", however, so if you're a fan of "The Mutations" you won't spot it unless you know this.

If you don't know about this film, I'd have to describe it as first-class British junk horror - the kind of stuff that filled Amicus's and Hammer's second tiers.

Didn't Freddie Francis, no stranger to Amicus and Hammer, direct this one? I've never seen it, just the Flytrap man in stills.

It's possible the title change came about because "The Mutations" is pretty generic, and might make one think of Fred Olen Ray or John "Bud" Cardos.

While looking for something else at a store, I came across this -- sounded interesting, but was a little expensive (at least at the store I was at), for something I didn't know anything about (except having seen some stills years ago)

Sounds like a 1960's hippie movie to me.

It's directed by some guy named Cardiff, and it's his last film as Director. Now I've watched it, it's plenty of fun. Donald Pleasance plays a very understated mad scientist (and he's one of the maddest I've ever seen, despite this understatement). The director clearly was trying to make connections with the film "Freaks" and there are a few elements of similarity.

It also stars Michael Dunn in a pretty central role. And Julie Ege (from 7 Brothers Meet Dracula). One of the features I like about this film is that it's sensible enough to primarily focus on the far more interesting villains after the obligatory get-to-know-the-heroes sequence near the start.

In my opinion it's worth checking out if only for the 15 seconds onscreen of the man Popeye. He owns.

Jack Cardiff was better known as a cinematographer, I think. And I see that this film was co-written by one of the guys who wrote "Island of Terror," a personal favorite. I'll have to check this film (whatever they end up calling it) out sometime.
