Wow. That's quite an accomplishment. This movie was dead for me just from the ads, because the female lead looked annoyingly vacant. Someone probably thought the thousand-yard stare made her look badass, but it makes her look like the lights are on, but nobody's home. That's not a good thing at all when you're presenting the hero of a movie like this to viewers. The ads also looked like it wanted to be a LotR without the budget, acting or script, and with vampires thrown into the mix for some reason.
I assume the Meat Loaf reference was a dig at Michael Madsen. I am a bit sad he's involved in this pile. I guess he's supposed to be some wise mystic-type (which is really going aginst type if true), but he looks like a janitor.
Finally, also in the "sad to see he was in this BS" department, I think Ben Kingsley must get a 10 on the Embarrassed Actor's Scale. Seriously, Ben, after you've been knighted, you can refuse stuff like this. This isn't like Alec Guiness appearing in Star Wars, because that was, you know, good. Also, the hairpiece is the least convincing excuse for hair I've seen since Kelsey Grammer wore an anchorman wig on SNL, and that was a joke.
You know Grand Funk, don't you? The wild, shirtless lyrics of Mark Farner? The bong-rattling bass of Mel Schacher? The ... adequate drumwork of Don Brewer? |

One thing sticks out in my mind from interviews with him; he likes the stories behind video games, but he wants to take them beyond the segments the fans already know (I forget exact quote).
Now, most people just stop at saying 'but thats why they WOULD see a video game movie - to see their stuff in action!'. That's missing the big picture with him (and on my webpage I did put a bit of a defense of him, but still):
This man is basically creating his own fan-fictions! Prequels, sequels, revisions - the man is a doing what thousands of obsessed fans do on their Geocities pages - create fan fiction!
Scary, ain't it!

| Opened on Friday and earned a pitiful $435 per theater. Released on DVD in March? |

The movie isn't good but it's far to early to be heralding it a surefire guarantee for worst of the year, certainly not with the release of BIG MOMMA'S HOUSE 2 just weeks away.
Here's my review of BLOODRAYNE. I also attempt to dissect the misguided career of Uwe Boll going into detail where I think he's gone horribly wrong.

The difference is Big Momma's House 2 has a director. |

Best quote I've found so far in reviews:
quote: Woody Allen has directed better action scenes than those found in BloodRayne.

See Match Point. And slapstick is an action scene (just ask Harold Lloyd and Buster Keaton.) |

From Shack News:
quote: A projectionist from UltraStar Cinemas has revealed to Shacknews a rather huge error made with the distribution of Uwe Boll's latest cinematic endeavor, the BloodRayne adaptation featuring such well-regarded thespians as Ben Kingsley and Michael Madsen. The UltraStar employee explained that when he got into work last week, he noticed that the theater had received a copy of BloodRayne. This seemed odd because his particular theater generally shows films aimed more at the arthouse set. "I didn't want to build this and put it in my theater," he said, so he checked up with UltraStar higher-ups. It turns out that a computer error resulted in the print being sent to 5,500 more theaters nationwide than was intended. "The computer that placed the order, instead of selecting just the correct theatres, it also selected 5,500 additional theaters, so they made that many extra copies." Whoops.
I asked how much each print costs, and he said that in total, it costs about $5,000 to have each set of reels delivered to a theater, meaning that as a very rough estimate the total costs incurred may be upwards of $27 million. "And that's 27 million that didn't go into production, didn't go into marketing, it's just expenditure that's sitting there," he said. "I mean, I know Ben Kingsley was in Ghandi, but nobody gets to just throw away that much money for nothing."
The situation is exacerbated by the fact that, according to Variety, the film is only showing on 985 screens, just over half of the original target of 1,900--and that's separate from the thousands of accidental extra copies. Now, the film is already millions in the hole and it earned only $1.2 million during its opening weekend, failing to place it in the top ten. Uwe Boll has had a lot of second chances, but might this spell the beginning of the end for the self-described misunderstood director?
Either this is going to be debunked in a few days as an urban legend, really is one of the biggest blunders of all time, or final proof that Boll is actually some sort of diabolical con man, although at this point I'm not even sure how he's profiting from it. All I can say if this proves true is that I'm totally speechless.

Foywonder, that's an absolutely amazing story. Geez, that's practically one print for everyone who went to see it last weekend!
One does suspect that it's either a mistaken report, or some sort of scam - I can't imagine that they'd have spent [b]27 million dollars[b] on a typo, without someone going, "Hmm, our print budget is overrun by 1000 percent, maybe we should look into this before we sign the check". One last stab at using those soon-to-be-changed German tax laws, perhaps?
Of course, maybe Uwe hires accounts that are as skilled at their job as he is at his.... |
