It's been a while, but I do recall that the guns the guest had did not fire blanks, they fired real bullets. They had a whole scene where the guy asks his friend what keeps him from accidentally shooting another guest. The friend explained the gun has a sensor in it that keeps it from shooting a person. IIRC, it was a heat sensor.
This whole idea was just an accident waiting to happen, such as if a person steps in front of a bullet that has already been fired or if the sensor becomes faulty, which I guess was the point of the original movie.

Ouch. Personally I've reached the point where the "hurt in the 'matrix' means hurt in real life" cliche is so annoying, I want a good reason for it before I'll even start to suspend my disbelief.
They could, should do something a little different. I mean, if you get punched in the face in the Matrix, your lips shouldn't start bleeding, but if you're killed, that could be bad as the mind slips into a vegatative state or something like that. I don't know, something.
I'm just guessing why they're having the Cell director direct this thing, and that's my theory. |
