Tommy Lee Jones & Gary Busey in UNDER SIEGE. Blew charisma vaccuum Steven Seagal off the screen but such a wide margin it was amazing.

Jason Isaacs in THE PATRIOT. Blew Mel Gibson's patented "I-have-been-wronged-now-watch-me-wreak-bloody-revenge" schtick completely off the screen. I mean, come on, when the most interesting character in the film BURNS DOWN A CHURCH FULL OF PEOPLE, you gotta know you have a problem.

Speaking of "Dracula" - does anyone remember Keanu Reeves from the 199x version?

All I could think of was Gary Oldman's whig.

Are you sure it was his Whig? Maybe it was his Federalist or Democrat. *g*

This one may not really belong in this category, but I'll mention The Last of the Mohicans. Daniel Day-Lewis was great in the film, but c'mon, Wes Studi's Magua blew everyone off the screen.

How else can you explain "Steven McQueen" being upstaged by a giant oil slick in The Blob?

Actually The Blob was made out of silicon (the same stuff they use for breast implants[there's a movie in there somewhere]).

Many a star in Hollywood has been upstaged by onscreen silicon.

For instance, I will never forget the scene with Penelope Ann Miller in Danny De Vito's "Other People's Money".

Although I pray no silicone was involved.

Sexiest scene I have ever seen.

This issue goes far far back. Milton's Paradise Lost is so much more interesting and fun than his Paradise Found that during Milton's own lifetime people accused him of not so secretly favoring evil and satan.

As Maxwell Smart would say "If only he had used his genius for niceness".

How about Robert Francis vs. Humphrey Bogart in The Caine Mutiny? There's a lopsided confrontation if there ever was one. The steel balls in Queeg's hand had more onscreen presence than Robert Francis.

Indiana Jones may have been a really cool character, but "Beloc" had two of the most memorable lines:

"Once again, we see that there is nothing you posess that I cannot take"
and
"Do you know what the ark is? It's a transmitter. A radio for talking to GOD!"

Wait, make that THREE great lines. I forgot about the speach where he points out that a cheap watch becomes priceless when found a thousand years later. Pretty much sums up archiology and treasure hunting.

Ming the Merciless in the Flash Gordon serials. It helpped that he was played by Charles Middleton who was a decent actor.

Certainly both jack Nicholson and Heath Ledger both playing the Joker walk off with their respective movies. One can hardly remember anyone else in them.

There is a very good reason that Ian Fleming named many of his James Bond novels after the villain. They are just more interesting than Bond, although in his original novels Bond is not all that nice and perfect but much more a real person than in the movies.

Playing the hero doesn't really require acting as art more technical competence, but playing the bad guy really is fun for an actor as he can take the characters in many different directions.
