Armageddon was one of the absolute worst movies for science blunders, being only topped by The Core. And even then, I think Armageddon wins out because more people are familiar with the real effects of vacuum and weightlessness than with extreme heat and pressure. I mean, only an idiot wouldn't realize that it's wrong to start a space station spinning before trying to dock with it. Stupid. I highly recommend the write-up for it on Bad Astronomy for the lowdown on just how badly it massacred the science.
Another ridiculous movie was Signs. Now I haven't actually seen it, because what I've read about it makes me not want to. Aliens that die on contact with H2O invading a planet that's 3/4th water?? Moronic. |

Actually, a closer read of Signs was that the aliens were killed by bacteria in the water. Still a lame resolution, but not that much lamer than, say, War of the Worlds.
Speaking of "duh" science... |

(May I continue for you? thanks) Speaking of "duh" science.... EVERYTHING in the recent War Of The Worlds movie indicates (We can only go by what we were told or shown) that the aliens had planted their war machines underground a couple of thousand years before the invasion. Didn't they develope MORE ADVANCED equipment since then? Or doesn't the word "obsolete" or "rust" exist on their planet?

In the movie Basic Instinct we have to believe that Michael Douglas drives across San fransisco in a matter of seconds. Having spent many hours fighting SF traffic (not to mention crosstown traffic),I have to conclude that he was traveling at around the speed of light. This is scientifically improbable.

You know, on Independence Day (I know), when Jeff Goldbloom's arguing against using the EVOL nukes against the alien he says "If we fire them, everybody else is going to fire them!" This points to the huge problem: No other country has tried them first!!! Why the hell would China wait for us to do it? They'd of probably whipped 'em out Day One.
And hey, President Dumbass, it really shouldn't take a cable guy to inform you that ships being strategically placed over ever major world city just MIGHT herald an attack. |

Borrowing from Greenhornet's post and appending to brandywine's...
There's also the question of how Smith and Goldblum were able to sneak a 1947 spaceship past alien security. If a WW2 era Curtiss Warhawk suddenly materialized out of nowhere and attempted a landing on a present day naval air carrier, don't you think somebody in the watch tower would be the least bit suspicious? |

THE CORE.
Lessee....gov'mint experimentation makes the core of the planet stop (No sense of scale here).....and its fixed by traveling in a prototype roboworm built by a homeless man in the desert, in about 2 days, drilling deep into the Earth, CIRCLING the interior of the planet, and blowing up nukes.
You forgot the part where the absence of magnetic firlds caused birds to forget what "up" or "down" is - you know, that stuff that is controlled by GRAVITY?
I am a complete science dunce, and even I noticed the following sceince idocies (which means they were pretty bad):
The Day After Tomorrow - Gee, I never knew before I saw this movie that people could outrun COLD FRONTS...
Dante's Peak - You can spin truck tires in molten lava.
Volcano - Fire trucks that fall over onto their left side will cause unlucky fireman to shoot 30 feet into the air out the right side window.
[b]Deep Blue Sea[b] - Sharks can consume any human is less than 3 seconds flat. Except for rap stars. They are all gristly so the best a shark can do is chew on their leg for a fe wminutes and swim off, leaving only a 2-inch gash in said leg. |

| Forgive my diocy here, by why would GODZILLA be too big to move? He's about the same size and shape as a Tyrannasaurus Rex, and we know they could move... |

| I forgot that I actually have a compliment for ID4. I was happy they didn't kill the Defense Secretary. That was a surprisingly mature decision on the screenwriters' parts. |

Again with that cornucopia of idiocy, ID4:
Now, I've only seen this once, way back around the time it came out, so maybe I'm mistaken, but weren't these alien ships supposed to be 15 miles in diameter or something? Wouldn't a ship (or multiple ones, for that matter)that size zipping around in the atmosphere have some kind of effect on the weather, at least in their vicinity?

Yep. 15 miles it is. And on that note, Bobby-G, also the ships came down like space capsuls, and made great heat on entry. Bet that played havoc on the weather channel!

I'll try to defend ID4 a bit (I'm always stumped why bad movie lovers hate this movie, but that is a topic for another day). As far as Zombiewhacker's P-47 analogy goes, they could sneak a P-47 past security if every fighter they had was still a P-47. Assuming this civilization is constantly migrating from planet to planet, and assuming they don't have an industrial component to their mother ship, then they are essentially stuck with the same hardware for generation after generation, as new ones are not being built (this would create it's own set of problems, but regardless...). It would be somewhat the equivalent of Battlestar Galactica still having the same vipers in their next generation, unless they have a ship that can actually build new Vipers, and someone to design them.
As far as the weather related phenomenon that should be a result of the alien ships arriving, while you are certainly correct that this SHOULD be happening, but to be fair, there is no indication it ISN'T happening. Maybe it is, and we just aren't being shown it. |

Actually, BT, I'm probably ID4's biggest fan here. But even I admit this is a movie best viewed with your brain turned off. There are logic loopholes big enough for those 15 mile long ships to fly through (with head clearance to spare).
And you're right, the only way Smith/Goldblum's strategy could be pulled off is if the aliens hadn't upgraded their technology in 50 years. That's precisely what I found so illogical. There's no reason why such a technologically advanced "civilization" couldn't put petal to the medal in the R&D department while at the same time doing the interplanetary Genghis Khan thing. |

Well, you could explain it away by saying these aliens stole their technology and aren't really smart enough to upgrade it, but if the viewer has to make that effort then somebody in the scriptwriter's trailer wasn't doing their job.
