Oh c'mon, Che was, like, all romantic and he rode his motorcycle around n stuff and he was, like, this hotty.
Hitler, y"mach shemo, painted pictures and was a vegetarian. |

In fairness to old Mahatma I think he later retracted that statement about he Jews and admited that his non-violent techniques of resistance wouldn't have worked on the Nazis.
Regarding Che and the C.S.A., I'm reminded of a phrase of Albert Camus', "Slave camps under the flag of freedom" He was refering to Soviet Communism but I think it works for the Confederacy as well.

Interesting. Can you point me to where you read that? |

I'm pretty sure it was from this book:

Hopefully I didn't conflate Vollmann's comentary with Ganhdi himself. That's why I put the equivical "I think" at the begining of my statement.
I'll let you know when I've looked it up.

It wasn't in the Vollmann. I'll have to rack my brain.

I read about this in an editorial Fred Thompson wrote a month or two back for National Review Online. If I remember correctly, Gandhi made those statements to a biographer writing about him shortly after WWII.
Not just the Jews, but Gandhi said the British should've surrendered to the Germans without a fight as well.
Now, admittedly, Gandhi would be inclined to have little love for the British Empire, but with just a few swapping of words he could've said, "Hitler should've surrendered without a fight."
Wouldn't have been too much trouble to say such a thing.
You see, the important thing to note is that Gandhi made those statements AFTER the war and with full knowledge of the wickedness of the Nazi regime. This was not some idle statement made in, say, 1939 before words like Auschwitz and Sobibor crept into the world's lexicon.
When Gandhi said that he knew about Auschwitz, yet he said it anyway.
A major loss of cool points that cannot possibly be made up by a later retraction. He cannot claim ignorance of the facts. |
