S&E reviews from yesteryear are now available in streaming video format at the Siskel & Roeper website.

Not every review is available (it's mostly from 1986-onward). But it's still a great resource if there's a particular movie out there where you wondered, "Gee, I wonder what S&E had to say about this picture?"

Unfortunately, perhaps the funniest review Ebert ever gave, Invasion: USA (with Chuck Norris) is not available.

The Lost World review is pretty funny. Even though they both dislike it, it ends with them arguing over whether the dinosaurs, particularly the compys, should have been friendlier.

The show was always great fun to watch, and it's nice to revisit a time when there was serious discussion of film. But damn, a lot of those reviews remind me of how frustratingly clueless both of those guys could be. I mean, watch the Miller's Crossing review. One of the all-time great films of the last 25 years, and Ebert eviscerates it, and Siskel can't even defend it properly. And Ebert's big criticism is "I couldn't follow it." (Ironic, since the guy is rumoured to frequently skip big chunks of films he's revewing to hit the snack bar. And yeah, I know that sounds mean, but from a lot of his reviews it's hard to come to any other conclusion.)

Ah,Prank...
The snack bar comment reminds me of the Animaniacs show where Slappy Squrril gives them hell for a bad review.

S&E chemistry finally came into its own around the time they ditched Sneak Previews for their first syndicated show, At the Movies. On the old PBS forerunner show, S&E were extremely stiff around each other, especially in the very beginning of the show's run, when the pair truly did hate each other's guts.

(Example, if you can ever track it down, watch their reviews of Apocalypse Now back in 1979. Ebert gave thumbs up, Siskel thumbs down, but their ensuing debate was so listless I felt like I was watching Dow Jones appraisals on "Wall Street Money Week" or something like that. By contrast, years later when they disagreed over another Vietnam movie, Full Metal Jacket, the sparks really flew.)

I think the funniest unintentional review by Roj was Napoleon Dynamite. He obviously was (again) trying to analyze the redeeming qualities of the characters by using emotion as a yardstick. The film just didn't delve enough into the souls of the despicable individuals portrayed!

He didn't get the movie at all...
