I believe there are a couple of people here that can read/speak Japanese. Can anyone tell me what the names are listed on this picture?
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/5/58/Firebombing_leaflet.jpg
I believe they are the names of Japanese cities.
Thanks in advance.

My Japanese is a dozen years rusty, so I can't actually read any of the writing, but I can confirm that they are place names. (The "yama" character -- "mountain" -- appears in three, and there are also characters indicative of rivers, forests, etc.)

Yes, they're all city names. Since the filename makes it clear that this is a propaganda leaflet, I assume they're all names of cities that were targeted for firebombing.
I'm not too sure about a couple of them, but I'll give you my best guess as to what they are. From left to right:
Nagano Takaoka Kurume Fukuyama Touyama Maizuru Outsu Nishinomiya Maebashi
Touzan (Touyama?) Kouriyama Hachiouji Mito
The ones in the corners are the ones I'm least confident about. I'm not 100% sure what the top character is on the left one (there is a Kurume city, though), and I didn't find any clear matches on the web or my dictionaries that could confirm the pronunciation for the one on the right. There don't seem to be any major cities by that name now, just listings for a few small towns and local place names, none of which included a pronunciation.
I'll have my girlfriend take a look at it and confirm my guesses when we get a chance.
Edit: Ok, now that's frustrating. My nice little macro-topped o's work in preview, but not in the posted page. It just displays the raw html codes. I've had to replace them with 'ou' to make them readable.
Edit #2: Added the correct name of Kouriyama to the list (as explained in my next post). |

Gentlemen, thanks for your responses.
Yes, the leaflet is one of three printed in late July/early August warning civilians to leave the cities in question as some or all on the list would be bombed soon.
Altair IV, thanks for your help.

Glad to help. I enjoy being able to show off one of my few real talents, even if I'm not really all that good at it. (^-^)
And it turns out that I was indeed very mistaken about the bottom-right name. The city is actually Kouriyama. I had completely misread the first character. It can be hard to tell similar ones apart sometimes, especially when the image isn't all that clear. |
