I agree, but in Spielberg's defense, he at least released a decent transfer of the original version of E.T. alongside his mangled version.

That reminds me, I was recently watching Star Wars:TPM on HBO and noticed that scenes had been added to it. Is Lucas tinkering with those movies as well now?

Yeah, there's a little bit added to the Pod Race, and an added scene on Coruscant where they take an air taxi to the Senate building, or something like that.
There's also a few brief things added to Episode II like Anakin taking Padme's hand during the wedding (using his robotic had).
I don't think the third one had anything done except for one scene that has a wipe intead of a cut (or vice versa).
In fact someone noted that Episode III was the first Lucas movie ever released on DVD that had it's original (more or less) theatrical cut! |

Because God knows the podrace scene was nowhere near long enough.
Back to the 'Duel' topic (kinda), Christine was a fine take on a silly ass premise. On its heels came Wheels of Terror, The Car, Maximum Overdrive. I used to have a gearhead friend who thought these films were brilliant. Ugh.
Some people like Conan the Barbarian. Fair enough, but it launched a never ending stream of Ators, Deathstalkers, Outlaws of Gors'es's, and countless other dim, degrading, poorly dubbed and overtly homo-erotic balls of fake blood and chicken grease.

LETHAL WEAPON and DIE HARD... Mismatched buddy cop flicks and guy vs. terrorists/army of criminals on/in a (BLANK) were fresh in the late 80's. Now you just kind of roll your eyes at the very notion of either.

So, was 48 Hours pre or post buddy cop flick shark jumping?
That's a string of words that should not make sense in the English language, but strangely I think it does.

48 Hours pre, Another 48 Hours post.
Both were kind of bookends to a slew of movies that were seemingly made by the same director/producer/screenwriter, etc.
In FACT, if you listen carefully, you'll hear the same incidental music in just about all of these.
48 Hours Red Heat Extreme Prejudice Commando Another 48 Hours
I'm almost certain there were other movies like these that used similiar camera work, music, editing, etc. Very much like they all came from the same outfit. A lot of the same supporting cast appeared in a lot of them too.
And I have to admit, I watched most of them...
Extreme Prejudice was better than Lone Wolf McQuade, by the way. |

Funny you should mention it. I never realized until just now how similar Extreme Prejudice and Lone Wolf McQuade were plot-wise, the only major discrepancy being that in the latter film rivals Chuck Norris and David Carradine were not childhood pals.

| That and the fact that Nick Nolte didn't base a lame TV series on Extreme Prejudice. It would have rocked, though. Imagine spending your saturday mornings watching a constipated Texas Ranger and a bunch of CIA operatives gunning down drug cartels. |
