I admit, I do take a perverse joy in pointing out that mostly liberal Hollywood films a lot of stuff in Canada so as to circumvent the restrictions and costs of operating in unionized America.
Republican or Democrat, business is business.
It would be nice to get some "new blood" into Hollywood, but I think this is a bad opportunity for it, as the new people would be regarded as scabs and ostracized when the "real" writers return. |

Well, uh, we have unions up here in Canada, too, y'know. Also flush toilets and antibiotics. The lower cost of filming relates mostly to the (until recently) more valuable American dollar and the fact that Toronto and Vancouver have bent over backwards to make themselves amenable to production, plus a handful of other factors.
I'm worried about "Lost" too (for the record, apparently 8 episodes, or half the season, are in the can, but the production has shut down on the rest). But if nothing was at stake, the writers wouldn't have any leverage. The last strike was way too polite. I think writers are mostly dying to get back to work, because writing, all else being equal, is supremely fun work. And there are people who are literally watching projects they've spend ages working on sit idle or even evaporate because of the strike. Shawn Ryan, creator of The Shield, wrote about this here: http://www.deadlinehollywooddaily.com/showrunner-explains-why-hes-on-strike/ (and he's not technically on strike). But if they don't do this now, and if they don't stick to their guns, recent history has shown that they're going to keep getting shafted forever.
If the strike drags out much longer than a few weeks, yes, most TV shows are going to be affected.

| If memory serves, during the last writer's strike, David Letterman's show did stay on the air. The only thing that suffered were the skits, like the Top Ten Lists. Some anonymous scab provided one or two Top Ten Lists, and they were so bad that Letterman gave up on that aspect of the show entirely. |
