I was just watching the MST3K version of Parts: The Clonus Horror on Vol. 12. There's a bonus interview with director Robert S. Fiveson, where he reveals that Dreamworks recently paid him an out-of-court settlement for infringing on his copyright to The Clonus Horror.

Apparently, when The Island went into production, Fiveson started receiving e-mails from fans all over the world basically asking, "Did you hear they were remaking The Clonus Horror?" In fact, Fiveson hadn't heard, and after talking his way into a sneak preview of The Island he became convinced that his movie had been ripped off. He took his case to court, and the judge ruled that the case should go to trial. It was at this time that Dreamworks decided to settle, essentially paying him to purchase the rights to a film they'd already remade.

So it all ends happily, for Fiveson anyway, and the director says he owes a debt of gratitude to fans of MST3K. It's only because of MST3K that most fans even knew of the original film's existence and rallied behind Fiveson's cause.

It's good to know he did get some credit, or at least some money. When I saw the trailer for this my first thought was: They're remaking Parts: The Clonus Horror. I don't see how they could argue they aren't basically the same story. Though I assume The Island had a lot more explosions.

Which is probably why he let Rhino release the MST3K version on dvd.

This was pretty well documented at Agony Booth. In fact, I think Albert feels partially responsible for shining the light of Truth on the matter :D
