I bought that book of Fletcher Hanks comics that Ken recommended on his blog and found his work to be as demented and funny as advertised but I found the afterword by the compiler to be somewhat sobering. Evidently Mr. Hanks wasn't a lovable eccentric ala Ed Wood but a prime a**hole who drank to much and beat and eventually abandoned his family. This kind of tempers my enjoyment of the comics a bit. I generally don't consider an artist's character when I approach their work but somehow while I can give Herman Melville or Miles Davis a pass for being jerks because I find their work to be sublime I just can't seem to get Hank's scumbaggery out of my mind while I'm looking at his screwy world.
