As a devoted minion of Jabootu, let me prostrate myself and admit that I have strayed. I have sought out and partaken of other bad movie reviews - in particular those of the schismatic Albert Walker at the Agony Booth.
In all seriousness, I hope that Ken takes a lot of pride in this thread that was actually renamed in his honor:
http://www.agonybooth.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=8449
It started as a discussion of a certain Melanie Griffith Witness rip-off quite familiar to the minions and quickly segued into the seminal review of same by Ken. As much as I love the site and reviews there, I have found the forum posters to be - (how to be euphemistic?) – somewhat hot-headed in declaring their liberal political stances. Ken should take great pride in the fact that so many posters, while having to profess their liberal bona fides for appearances sake, nevertheless treasured his reviews. (And by all means further kudos to maestros Lyz and “Braineater” Will. You are mentoring a legion of bad-movie aficionados as well.) |

This is why I asked Albert to make his temporary ban of me permanent. The dissections are great, but the PC Orthodoxy of the messageboard? No thanks.

Hehe- saw that thread earlier and almost commented on it. Funny how people of a conservative bent always seem to wind up being called "bitter". I've never seen anything in any of Ken's reviews that could remotely be construed as bitter, but then I'm a Kool-ade drinker myself... anyhoo I happen to enjoy the Agony Booth recaps a lot but I'm much more comfortable in this forum, Libertarian heathen though I be...

| I haven't seen any bitterness in Ken's reviews, and I find Ken's political rants amusing, not bitter and mean-spirited at all. |

Even though I'm a card carrying non-conservative I don't mind Ken's political digressions. I'm pretty anti-hippie myself and find his hippie bashing amusing.

I'm probably so far to the left of Ken that I'm practically to the right of him again, but the right-leaning message of his reviews has never bothered me; it's open, stated and out there to take or leave.
For example, I'm probably far more in sympathy with the political viewpoint of Superman IV than Ken (to say the least), but that doesn't stop me appreciating his critique of the film and agreeing that it is the biggest pile of pants ever.

I think I can safely say, its Ken's easy going 'Eh, who needs flame wars..." attitude we all respect. Flamers, regardless of political stripe, are emotional children, in effect. And really, who needs that? I've tried to leave all those days behind. Not too usefull for an active intellect, in my view.

Actually, I am pretty bitter. Earlier this week I coughed, and a sourball shot out of my mouth. I guess I'd been forming it in the back of my throat, like a pearl. True story.
I appreciate all my defenders, and I could talk about the small percentage of reviews that feature much political material (one review last year, which I expect is pretty representative), or that those films are themselves explicitly political and I'm just reacting to what's already there, or whatever. Really, though, what's the point? There are a lot of sites on the web, and nobody should waste their time at one they don't like, no matter what the reason is.
I do think it's kind of funny that there's a grand total of *one* bad movie site out of a zillion of them that reflects a (pretty moderately) conservative viewpoint, and yet that's apparently one too many for a couple of people. Despite, you, THE DIVERSITY.
That said, Agony Booth is a great site, and I certainly don't take it as an insult that somebody would prefer that site to this one.
PEGGY: I don't see how having a girl on the team would ruin it. Did a woman judge ruin the Supreme Court? HANK: Yes, and that woman's name was Earl Warren.

| Ken, Ken, Ken. Don't you know that diversity doesn't include diversity of thought? Are you not enlightened? |

Ken is the Herman Melville of bad movie recappers. One may not always agree with his politics but his various digressions on themes both political and non are always well argued and fun to read and add a nice spice to his recaps.

I don’t want to extend this too much further. After all we talk about them talking about us and then they talk about us talking about them and we talk about them talking about our talking about them and then the entire universe implodes in upon itself due to the sheer quantity of navel-gazing.
I’d just like to reiterate my feelings on the tenor of that board, however, so Ken knows how much of a compliment he’s actually getting over there. Things can get extremely nasty over there when conservatism and/or Christianity is the topic. I think many of the posters are young and cocky and have yet to be mugged by reality so a lot of it I think is due to a certain immaturity. To bring up Ken’s work up however – especially Superman IV – and merely tar him with the extremely anemic epithet “bitter” really points to the existence of a vast reservoir of respect (even some closet agreement). I’ve tried to come up with some lame analogy to capture some of the intensity of feeling re conservatism on those forums and this is the best I can do. It’s as if Hitler was talking about Stalin and the only bad thing he could think to say about him was “I don’t like that guy’s mustache.”. So by all means please continue discussing politics in your reviews. Certainly not solely for those guys (Think of the children!), but I know they’re going to keep reading and therefore getting an alternative political view presented both wittily and eruditely. |
