We've seen what he can do with zombies and vampires and wizards and monsters and Tara Reid, now Uwe Boll leaves behind the world of videogame inspired cinema and the horror/fantasy genre altogether for a more realistic war movie called about the tunnel rats: American special forces soldiers whose mission was to hunt and kill the Viet Cong in man-to-man combat within the endless tunnels dugout beneath the Vietnamese jungle. Personally, I think we're long overdue for such a movie, but the question remains as to whether or not the guy Uwe Boll is the guy to bring it to us.

The trailer for TUNNEL RATS has just been uploaded to YouTube by Boll's production company. To me it looks like a competently made production yet there's in unmistakable Cannon Films vibe emanating from it, which isn't necessarily a bad thing unto itself. I also can't help but notice that for a movie about guys who have to crawl around underground much of what we see in the trailer takes place above ground. Click the link below, check it out for yourself, and draw your own conclusions.

Don't forget 84 Charlie Mopic.

As for the trailer, I'm not sure. I think it wants me to believe that this is 300 set in Vietnam. With the American soldiers as the spartans and the Vietcong as the Persians. At least that is what the person who cut the trailer wants me to think.

At least with some horror movie elements, where Vietcong seem to jump out of nowhere and hurt the characters.

As Ken would say, it's all in execution. Who knows? If Boll plays his cards right...

*I see everyone looking at me with 'are you crazy' expresions'*

...oh, yeah. Well, it was a good thought while it lasted.

Boll sure has gone Hollywood.

GVK: You had mentioned in your set reports that the U.S. was doomed to lose Vietnam and that your film would explore this. With many comparing the conflict in Iraq to the Vietnam conflict, what lessons do you believe have not been learned and do you see the U.S. heading down the same road in Iraq as they did in Vietnam?

UB: Absolutely! You cannot enter someone else's country, remove their government or leader and expect the people to celebrate your actions. This applies even when the country's leader is a criminal or a dictator. The present situation in Iraq, for the average citizen, is horrific. They would be happier if Saddam was still in power. The Iraqi's now reflect on Saddam's reign as a happier time. The present situation is absurd.

One can be killed on any street corner, as bombings continue to take place everywhere. Historically you were killed only if you criticized Saddam. Now everyone is a target. The U.S. entered Iraq without any plan or strategy once Saddam was removed from power. The Iraqi people do not want the Americans in their country. The anti-American sentiment is fuelled further with the U.S. presence in Iraq.

If the U.S.troops leave Iraq, there will likely be a civil war. If the U.S. stays in Iraq the hatred For Americans will continue to foster and the average Iraq. Iraqi citizens will lose any chance of experiencing a normal life. The statistics reveal that 70% of Iraq's people are afraid to leave their home and go to work and 35% want to leave their country. The Iraq war is yet another example of the American plight to solve international problems through war. War has never resolved anything since the Second World War. It failed in Korea, Vietnam, Iraq and Afghanistan. It will not solve anything in Iran.
The TUNNEL RATS film will hopefully reveal the ineffectiveness and absurdity of war.

I hope you do that Boll.

Ya know. I'm more amused by this latest ally in the anti-war movement. And even after he said this, I'll still VERY WILLING to go check this movie out. How strange that I just don't feel any angst?

You mean like the ineffectiveness and absurdity of the war you mentioned two sentences ago?? Uwe sets a new world record for attention deficit.

Note to Mr. Boll: When Stanly Kubrick makes anti-war films they are masterpieces whether I agree with the underlying theme or not. You have been, until now, a lovable mediocrity. Do not become a pretentious jackhole.

You took the words right out of my mouth, Sardu. As for Uwe avoiding becoming a pretentious jackhole.... too late.

C'mon guys.

Boll's a toothless alligator, at best, when it comes to political commentary.

He's not a respected filmmaker trying to recapture past glory by making controversial films all the while not realizing that times have changed.

Nor is he an up and coming filmmaker who's trying to emulate the success of Michael Moore.

Besides, I think his anti-war stance was nothing more than an after-thought. Look at the question the interviewer asked. He's clearly leading Boll

Before anyone gets up in arms about any of Boll's political views please keep in mind that this is the same Boll who, when I conducted a phone interview with him a few months back and asked him about TUNNEL RATS, began going into detail about the training the actors went through for the role, very much talking up the experienced African mercenaries (the movie was filmed in South Africa) that taught his actors. I was pretty much speechless on the other line because at one point he was talking these guys and bragging about how good they were while I'm sitting there thinking, "Aren't these the machete wielding butchers who've been killing men, women, and children - committing genocide, no less?" Yeah, Boll's anti the absurdity of war, but if ethnic cleansers can help him get his movie made, he's suddenly gung ho.

As I always say with Dr. Boll, take anything he says with a grain of salt; just sit back and enjoy the madness.

Oh, and more Boll movie trailer goodness has arrived. With FAR CRY he has now officially turned into the new Golan-Globus. Here's a link to the trailer (and my two cents) - http://foywonder.livejournal.com/112426.html
