Now that it is 2008 and the Bush presidency is coming to a close, Tom Laughlin is stepping up his efforts to get his latest Billy Jack made. I think he senses that his moment might be passing.
To interest potential investors he is now giving away plot point to his latest film and secrets on how he wanted to film it. On the front page of his web site, he has a detailed video were he makes his pitch. I must tell you he shocked even me.
Remember how Ken found Tom's use of real college shootings in Trial of Billy Jack as one of the film’s more repugnant moments. Tom is planning on doing that again. This time with a twist that will heighten the ick factor times 10. Tom wants to send actors and film crews to various hellholes around the world to film segments for his film. I know that he means well in trying to bring attention to these trouble areas. But to use genuine suffering as a tool in a film investment, to me, crosses a line. Say what you will about the last two Rambos, Stallone had the restraint to use actors and not real people.
As my sleep deprived brain slowly drifts away from the world I now inhabit. Let share just one of the many thoughts I had about the character elements to the film. Tom’s said that Jean’s new Peace Corps would have people who were gang bangers, unwed mother, cutters (people who cut themselves to get a high) and potential suicide cases. The idea that you would take such a group and expose them to the soul-destroying areas like Darfur, the Congo and Cambodia without consequences just seems unrealistic. Call me a cold hearted bastard but I don’t see how feeding soup to room full of rape victims is going to be good for a psyche. Especially one that is already bent toward self-destruction.
Now that I’ve heard his pitch, I must say:
PLEASE DON’T FUND THIS GUY!!!!!!

You summed it up, Capt! Does Laughlin still think he's part of "the NOW generation"? That was then, Tom, there's a whole new set of rules and your kind has been passed by years ago.

That really is distasteful, to say the least. It makes him look like a total bastard, using real people in real horror and pain to provide some sort of backdrop for his stupid little work of fiction. That this even seems likea good idea to him makes me question Laughlin's mental state. Seriously, is he so far gone that he perhaps thinks Billy Jack really exists and can fix these problems by preaching hippie-style peace between ass-kickings? Does he think he's so morally superior to other people that he can rub people's faces in man's inhumanity to man in the service of his dumbass movie?
You know Grand Funk, don't you? The wild, shirtless lyrics of Mark Farner? The bong-rattling bass of Mel Schacher? The ... adequate drumwork of Don Brewer? |

Well, remember in his eyes it's not a mere movie. It's step one towards saving the world. It's his Gospel. Yes, I do think he's that delusional and egomaniacal.

Sardu is quite right. Tom "lost it" a long time ago. He keeps going by buying into the illusion that he can "make a difference". To him, it's relevent documentary

My only problem with this thread is that I find it hard to believe that anyone else believes the nutjob is ever going to get the funding to make this movie.

Hey - I sent him $20 a few months ago (I need to cut back on the beer) - Delores Taylor sent me a personalized "Thank You" note and a "The Music of Billy Jack" CD (seriously). I was quite surprised and will treasure that always :) It doesn't get any better than that. Well, maybe...

Maybe he could get Steven Seagal to go to Darfur.

| Not a bad idea. He wouldn't solve a thing, but at least he'd lose the overweight. |

Calm yourself Foy. I never believed he would.
If you ware referring to the title I have chosen and subsequent signature, it was a reference to a running gag that I had whenever I would write about Laughlin. The one where I would appeal to god in BIG letters to fund Laughlin. I would then chuckle to myself and fancy myself clever.

But the real point isn’t whether or not he gets funding. The point is that me and some of the other board members were rooting for Tom (hbrennon did, Ken too ) and hoping that he would pull a rabbit out the hat and get funding. With his out-of-control ego we knew he’d take the money and create bad movie gold. And above all, that no one would get hurt.
Now that Tom has made his intensions clear, I’m not so sure that would be a good idea. The jokes I’ve been making about Tom getting funding seem less funny now. I knew Laughlin was crazy. But not THAT crazy. It’s kind of like finding out your favorite politician was actually a raving bigot all along.
Now, more to the point.
I reviewed his video a few more times to make sure what I said about him was correct (it was). But the more I watched, I think Tom’s plans are more daring. He sounds like he wants to fund a WHOLE SOCIAL MOVEMENT under the auspices of creating a film. A movement where he is totally in charge. He wants to send people all over the world to be his do-gooders and influence politics at the same time. And if they happen to get a movie out of it, all the better. He at least wants to say that his movie left the world a better place than it was before.
You might think I’m reaching. But watch the video again with that in mind and see if that strikes a chord.
