I decided that for giggles I'd start a topic on southerners who aren't hammered in to the very tired stereotype of the aforementioned stupid evil racists.

The Closer: The detective the series revolves around is a native of Georgia, and she (as well as her parents) avoid the nearly mandated mold.

It is a tired cliche of Hollywood.

I mean, how great could Fletch Lives! had been if the entire movie basically wasn't dedicated to perpetuating every negative stereotype of the South you could possibly squeeze into one sitting?

You want to make a film about Southerners who arn't stupid, evil racists? Film ANYTHING by Anne Rivers Siddons, or film one of the late Virginia Lanier's books about Jobeth Sidden, the bloodhound trainer-detective. Only problem is-SPOILER-when a stupid, evil racist does appear in one of her books, he's so STUPID you wonder how he reached voting age without landing in jail.

Hmmm.... toughie.
OK, George C scott as PATTON. Even though General Patton was born in California, he always insisted that he was a Southener. I don't think they mention that in the movie, though.
I guess Audie Murphy in his movie biography, too. But most people don't consider Texas as "the south".
I suppose that I'll have to go with Davey Crockett in the Disney and the John Wayne/Alamo versions.

Speaking of Southeners getting the short end of the stick in movies, I think when Bill Mauldin's book "Up Front" was made into a movie, the writers turned his characters --Willie and Joe"-- into NEW YORKERS when Mauldin had said they were "a Texas redneck" and a "Choctaw indian".

John Grisham's A TIME TO KILL always springs to mind which is surprising giving that he's from Mississippi. Need a way to help spice up the story: SEND IN THE KLAN! Speaking as a lifelong Mississippian, I remember watching that movie and trying to figure out what decade it was should have been set in because it sure didn't seem modern.

Greenhornet : Good point about UP FRONT. The movie version did not catch Mauldin's guys. Way too Hollywood.

Generally, when the movie in question is about music (Tender Mercies, EG) the racism angle tends to be dropped.

THANK YOU! I haven't seen A Time To Kill all the way through, but I've seen enough to tell me what I need to know.

While we're at it, here's a hint, Hollywood: yes, we Mississippians have heard of this thing called air conditioning.

How would you rate a movie like To Kill a Mockingbird?

I saw it and was frankly bored with it. The movie depicts southerners going through life in depression era south. You kind of get the impression Stanley Kubrick used this film as a model for 2001: A Space Odyssey.

The racism aspect doesn’t really come in to play in any big way. Even the most evil character in the film was Mr. Uwel. He turned out to be a coward (he attacked children) and a bitter man who seemed to hate everybody and everything.
