I just Netflixed Boll's ItNotK: ADST, and was surprised how entertaining it was, not just in its ineptitude but as an actual movie. There's still a high cheese factor, with Matthew Lillard doing his best impression of Val Kilmer (in the Island of Dr. Moreau) and Jason Statham's boomerang that bounced off of his victims back into his hands (and lots of other classic Boll moments)! As well, pretty much everything useful, plot-wise, was stolen from Lord of the Rings.
That being said, this movie was very entertaining, and surprisingly well made. Is Uwe Boll actually becoming a competent director? I'd have to see more than one halfway decent movie before saying that, as it's not hard, IMHO, to make an entertaining movie by ripping off Tolkien (although if you saw Eragon, you might disagree), but for Uwe Boll it's an accomplishment. |

A better question is, has Boll for once decided to make a movie in a competent manner? If this movie is actually as good as you say, it means something frightening, that Boll really is a capable director, but doesn't care enough about the subject matter to make an effort. Now the question becomes, is he a hack, or does he choose to make less than his best effort on this kind of movie, and which possibility is worse?
You know Grand Funk, don't you? The wild, shirtless lyrics of Mark Farner? The bong-rattling bass of Mel Schacher? The ... adequate drumwork of Don Brewer? |

| Calling the movie competent is probably quite generous. In the Name of the King : a Dungeon Siege Tale really does seem like a shonky piece of fanfic that somehow got made into a movie. Boll still has no idea how to tell a story, stage a scene, write decent dialogue or frame a shot etc. etc. I wouldn't call it well made, not by any stretch of the imagination. It is still as entertaining as hell for lovers of bad movies though, with plenty of golden moments such as the ninja soldiers attack, the flaming Krug catapault and Matthew Lillard's use of the word 'behooves'. Matthew Lillards's performance, and performance is the word, has to be seen to be believed. The only explanation I can come with for his performance is that he was very very drunk whilst filming his scenes or he was deliberately trying to get fired. |

Re: Matthew Lillard
His performance does need to be seen to be believed. My only other theory is he's a B-Movie fan, got the opportunity to act in an Uwe Boll film, and decided to make history. |

| I've never seen In the Name of the King but I have seen Hawk the Slayer. Using the latter as a point of reference, which would you say was worse? |

It's certainly what I would have done if I were him. The astonishing thing to me (and probably to him) is that Uwe looked at what he was doing and said "Yeah, go with that!"

| I haven't seen the movie, but I was amused to see the DVD in Wal-Mart the other day. It had one of those carboard sleeves that cover the real DVD case that a lot of "special edition" DVDs have. But the main function of this sleeve seemed to be to cover up all the credits, so no one would know who the director was before buying it. |

Zombiewhacker: I'd have to watch Hawk the Slayer again to fully answer that question. In the Name of the King was more, dare I say, professional looking!!!, if you can believe that. Beyond that, it probably depends what you like better, glowing hula hoops, or the Krug who lights himself on fire, climbs into a catapult, flings himself into a tree, and then hugs the nearest soldier, causing his chain mail armor to burst into flames.
Sardu: Uwe Boll probably thought it was brilliant. I recently watched House of the Dead with Uwe Boll's (and an actor and producer or something) commentary, and it was illuminating. He seemed to think that an actor pretending that a 5 pound box was really heavy qualified the guy to win an Oscar, and legitimately seems to think that he's a genius. Also, did you know there was a Lord of the Rings homage in House of the Dead? It actually crossed my mind when I saw the shot (stupid guy teen hiding in the hollow under the tree), but then I thought "No, even Uwe Boll wouldn't do that deliberately". Sorry if this is incoherent, but Boll does have that effect on people ;) |

I thought about this myself when I saw Bloodrayne. I don't know if he's getting better so much as he's ripping off better directors. (A fake Peter Jackson looks a hell of a lot better than a fake Paul Anderson.)
