Friends!

I was looking in to finding a multi-disc DVD system when I decided on a lark to see if Blue Ray had one. AND BOY DID THEY EVER!

I present to you the HES-V1000:

Click here to get info on the HES-V1000.

Here is part of a review:

It’s time to take that old drawer full of VHS tapes out back and give it the proper burial it deserves. Analog is dead. But while the VCR’s successor, the DVR, offers a quick way to record media, one thing it doesn’t offer is much in the way of long term, archival storage. Great for taping last night’s episode of Lost, not so great for keeping baby’s first steps. And with the explosion of high-def media, anything that’s going to store it for a while is going to need a lot of storage. Fortunately, Sony’s got it covered with its latest entertainment system.

Some will grouse about the price, but take that price and divide it by the years Blue Ray will reign supreme (I suspect no time soon) and see the advantage of having one.

And frankly, I'd love an excuse to hide my DVD/CD jewel cases.

Uhhhh- if you rip your disks to a server why do you need a 200 disk changer?? I'd rather put that cash into another couple terabytes of storage :) But yeah, that's definitely the right idea.

It's not for ripping.

If it was, I'm sure certain lawyers with baseball bats would be looking for the knees of Sony executives.

The memory is for home videos, pictures, and music. I'm sure various copy protects would stop you from loading DVD's in to the memory.

And besides, I don't trust that type of storage anyway. Not since my last computer went on me. From now on, HARD COPIES!!!!

Well, you're supposed to own the hard copy before you rip it to your server, and of course there's dissent over how the law works but right now you're generally considered to have the legal right to make back up copies of your own disks. That way all your movies are on the HD where they can be indexed, browsed and easily accessed. I ran a system like that in the early days of DVD because it was a cheap alternative to expensive line doubling equipment however I eventually got sick of maintaining it and went back to a dedicated upscaling player when they became available.

All of this will (obviously) seem primitive in the years to come. I'm waiting for an ordered movie presentation (with extras), music, whatever to be sent directly to my integrated home system (with digital theater/entertainment center) - which can also be played on a wafer-thin portable device (anywhere in the world). All voice-activated, needless to say.

Movies will probably follow suit behind music in the fairly near future- that is to say, for about 80% of people downloads will be the quick and easy norm, generally at DVD quality or lower (for portable devices) and the other 20% of technophiles will support Blu-Ray and whatever other HD options come along on disks and physical media they can collect and archive. Although streaming 1080P may become the standard if the net connections get fat enough.

Factor one more thing in.

There can be more improvements beyond progressive scan high density pixels.

Take the frame rate, it's currently still at about 30 frames per second. Imagine if they raise that to about 100 frames per second. Movement would come off a lot cleaner.

But theoreticially, what will be the perfect entertainment system?

I think it will be a television with massive amounts of memory. External devices will not be nessasary. It will be connected to a network that can download what ever you order. Movies will have extras attached and it will run smoothly within the system. And the memory can protect itself from power surges, external damage, and age.

Very possibly. I bet the higher frame rates will become standard in theater projection as well, especially as 3D systems become prevalent. You may be right about the TV system, though the exact opposite may come about as well- the TV will be nothing more than an HD monitor connected to your PC that will show all content; movies, TV or computer related.
