Just watched THEY SHOOT HORSES, DON'T THEY? -- YOW, that's an uplifting experience!

(my "review" can be found here: http://moviesgonemoldy.blogspot.com/ )

Got me to thinking: if one where to put on a festival of downbeat, depressing movies, a Marathon of Misery, if you will. what movies would would be included? I'm thinking of movies that are well made, quality movies (which is what makes them effectively depressing, I guess...)

I guess I'd start of the list with THEY SHOOT HORSES, DON'T THEY?

More suggestions? I wonder how many such films people could take in a row?

Rob

I'd put The Plague Dogs and Raging Bull in there.

Pink Floyd: The Wall for sure. A film by Joan Chen called Xiu Xiu: The Sent Down Girl is one of the saddest things I've ever seen in my life. Most of Lar's Von Trier's films are exercises in almost absurdist amounts of melodrama, especially Dancer In The Dark. And then a good drug movie; maybe Requiem For A Dream.

The Sea Prince and the Fire Child. It starts off like a Disney-esque animation, but then oh boy...

Black Robe It's kind of a northland version of The Mission.

*Spoilers*

In 17th century French Canada a Jesuit missionary and a few natives and French settlers brave the elements and the brutality of the Iroqois to make contact with the Huron mission. Most of them either desert or get beat up and killed by the Iroquois and the few who make it to the Huron find the missionaries and the Hurons dying from scarlet fever. A cheery postscript adds that the Huron eventually get wiped out by the Iroquois. A classic "and they all died" happy ending.

"You talk to us about heavy artillery. Thank God, we don't have any. It's the lightness of its guns that make the French army what it is." - representative of the French General Staff to the budget commission of the Chamber of Deputies, 1909

Pink Floyd: The Wall is a nasty little movie in a number of ways. Requiem for a Dream is unbelievable. Don't forget Jacob's Ladder and Downfall. All of them are like having Margo Timmins sing at your wedding. And, of course, when...

Old Yeller and Easy Rider always brought a tear to my eyes, but then I'm a sucker for a movie with a happy ending.

I was thinking about flicks that are pretty much unrelenting bummers all the way through. Some other flicks I can think of:

ALIEN 3
LORD OF THE FLIES (the first version at least)
NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD
LAST MAN ON EARTH

There was a british movie I saw some years back called NAKED -- Don't remember much about the plot, but do recall everybody and everything in the flick was depressingly miserable.

Children of Men was a playful little romp. It might have been even more depressing if it'd made a lick of sense.
