It seems this fellow can't accept that someone can make fun of a cheap movie and love it at the same time. I'd imagine he would have a similar reaction to the B-Masters Cabal.

I like that he denotes at the end that he wrote an anti-MST3K article 20-years ago. Seems like he was the wrong guy to be doing that review in the first place.

Bill Warren, author of the superlative Keep Watching the Skies, sadly also has expressed similar views.* Frankly, we love and cherish these movies, which would otherwise be forgotten. The only time I feel something like MST3K skirts the edge is when they lambaste a decent film like Revenge of the Creature just because it's been assigned them. Past that, though...
[*I think Warren just doesn't Michael Medved, who helped create this sort of thing, and thus is attacking it for that reason.]

And this guy is a Godzilla nerd. Wrote some useful G tomes...but here, the man just don't get it. In fact, I've found many people who don't get the show, are likely ignorent of the referances many jokes are based on. John Stanley, the Horror Host from L.A., hates the show...yet his books are filled with jokes and puns no better then the Mistys do...he should talk?

Looking at the piece, I see it's by Stuart Galbraith, like Warren a great author of film books for McFarland Press. Some of his remarks are valid, but again, I agree with Eric, that such critics don't see the vast affection that often colors these reviews. As hilariously awful as The Giant Claw is, I LOVE that movie, in a way I'd never love something like (pick at least a couple of titles off this week's top ten theatrical films). He's right, though, that laughing at special effects purely because they're not up to modern standards is doltish. I've seen people laugh at the ants in Them!, and I agree, screw you, moron.
Laughing at special effects that were embarrassing even at the time, though, that's a different matter. Are we *not* supposed to laugh when we can see the hand holding up the space rocket in Robot Monster? Please.

Galbraith is totally off the rails.
"... setting aside the ethical problems of such shows for a moment..."
So in Galbraith's world it's unethical to riff Manos: The Hands of Fate? That's not speculation on my part. He actually comes out and says it.
The reviewer is entitled to his opinion, of course, but if really wants to pick of a fight, wouldn't Michael Nelson's Rifftrax be a more deserving target? |

CNN did a story back in 2003 covering a very small-time bad film festival - we're talking a back room of a library - being put on in New York City. I still to this do not know why they even bothered doing this story, especially since the attendance was a whopping 6 people, but I've never forgotten about it because the woman running the festival clearly had no idea what she was talking about and her choice of movies reflected that. It was purely about the inferiority of the special effects on her part. And what three films were the highlight of her bad film festival? THE BLOB, THEM!, and THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL. She should have been shot over that last one.

Day the Earth Stood Still? WTF? Why not Forbidden Planet while you're at it?
Now, two years from now, with the NEW Day the Earth Stood Still...

I've never heard any Rifftrax (I'm not computer literate enough to deal with it) but I'd think that many of the bloated blockbusters that they tackle would deserve the scalple more than little b-movies from earlier eras.

Thats one of the things about any riff show. You don't have to hate a movie...though thats sometimes unavoidable...as you can love it, and still see its flaws...like with THE GIANT CLAW! I love it, but 'big as a battleship' is a straight line that must...MUST...be 'noogied'! kinda like a" I love my sister, but wait till she finds the lizard in her underware drawer!' kinda affection.

Well, now I need to get Wasp Woman now. I have the others for Cinematic Titanic (Finally saw Doomsday Machine that way) and this is the modivation to get it right away.
As for Rifftracks, I guess it deserves some stick from time to time, but it did make Island of Doctor Moreau and Battlefield Earth watchable. |

If their DVD for Wasp Woman's as funny as their live version during their recent 20th anniversary tour, it'll definitely be worth the money.

Man, I'd love to seen that. I'm like Leonard Maltin when they had him 'guest mad' GORGO. I like the film as is...but oh, the riffin! The riffing... " He's like a chimp dressed up." "They got into port, and everone, was okey-they went out for lunch, and felt bet-terrrr!" "Clatter across the deck in my pitchfork and cloven hooves?...okey..." "He said"Blow it out your...somethin'..."
