You know, the idea of Chris Pine yelling "KHAAAAAAAAANNNNNN!!!" just doesn't work.

I think even someone who hated Star Trek would say those stills are just plain cruel.

Normally I hide my extreme nerdiness from others, but this topic brings out a similar event.

On one of the last episodes of Stargate SG-1 they crew was talking to a hollywood guy about how their adventures whould play out in a movie. Some one suggests a younger edgier take. And the result was pretty much what we see at the top of the page here.

But hey, maybe we are wrong. In some ways I think most of us would rather be supprised by unexpected compitance then expected incompitance.

Funny enough, I just sat through an episode of one the old ones in hotel in Albuquerque. It doesn't exactly hold up all that great after 40 years. Shatner would never have landed the job these days. And the sexism is jaw-dropping. Sure, I'm pretty far left for a Republican, but seriously you gotta check some of those episodes out. Captain Kirk in a moment of sensitivity, explaining the birds and bees to a confused young man: "There's no right way to hit a woman...." WOWZERS! Good thing we have all those wrong ways, eh Jimbo?

But...look at those pictures! Scotty-as-homewrecker isn't that much of a stretch going by the old series. The character isn't that well developed to begin with, but what we do know doesn't point to a man known for sensitivity. I saw the episode where the premise is that a female engineer made a mistake that got Scotty bonked on the head with no serious injuries. However, now he hates women. (huh?) So the other three guys decide the only logical thing to do is take him to a red light district. I must say that particular solution would never have occured to me.

I think that was meant as an aberration though. There where at least two other episodes, seems like (Lights Of Zetar being one, maybe??) where Scott got all moon-eyed over a fetching lass and he was definitely portrayed as a gentleman of gallantry and chivalry; the sort who would always put a woman on a pedestal high enough to look up her dress.

And then you have Spock's Brainwhere a civilization of women with "minds of children" need Spock's he-man brain to keep their technology running.

I think you fine folks are overlooking the fact that Paramount is looking to turn this movie into a new franchise. With the previous Trek franchises the studio got "screwed" because by the time each movie series finally got under way their respective crews were already middle-aged. By the time the third entry in each film series rolled out their casts were already well over the hill.

In this case, the case is fresh-looking and young. Sure Chris Pine looks baby-faced now, but by the time a third film or fourth film is unveiled years from now he'll be well into his late thirties... mature enough to carry off the part yet young enough to remain in the captain's chair: a real incentive to keep making more movies. Ditto for the rest of the crew.

The real question is whether this cast can act. Urban and Pegg are known quantities, but as to the rest...
