I've been following that, Ericb, very interesting! I gotta say, though, I don't believe that franchises in Los Angeles or Las Vegas are going to be hits; and Monterrey, Mexico is such a roll of the dice that I have to assume that the league knows it.

**shrug** Let's see what happens. I'm rooting for the league!

Incidentally, I have to amend what I said earlier about the reboot of the WUSA likely going to fail. The reboot, called Women's Professional Soccer (WPS) is using a grassroots low-budget business model that is the exact opposite of the WUSA's dumbass get-in-on-the-top-floor model. And the new name (emphasis on "Professional") indicates that they now get the point that it's a profit enterprise, not a social cause.

The most unintentionally laughable sports name I've ever heard can be seen at the link below, and the logo is even more goofy:

It's the "z" that pushes them into Jabootu territory

I knew the Arena League was in trouble, but I didn't know it would get this bad this quickly:

It does look like arena football has kicked it in for at least this season.

Yup. And I don't believe the league will ever play another game. It's never happened in sports history that a league has suspended operations for a full season and returned (the NHL lockout wound up cancelling the season's games, but front-office operations continued, and folks still got paid).

I'm morbidly giggling at "pending approval of the players' union." Like the union's opinion matters if owners aren't willing to field teams.

The UFL has got to be lovin' this. It couldn't come at a better time for them.

afl2 is still good to go for 2009, though. Proof positive that it wasn't the recession that killed the AFL, it was the over-budget spending of Jon Bon Jovi, Jerry Jones, John Elway, et al.
