Just watched the Rob Lowe-Donald Sutherland remake of Salem's Lot as part of my month-long Halloween marathon. Overall it was better than I expected. Dramatically it was deeper than the David Soul-James Mason version -- richer characters, more plot details.

On the other hand, the Soul-Mason really delivered in the scares department. The new version didn't even come close -- too much emphasis on digital effects and hyperkinetic camera work. Certain scenes from the original version -- Geoffrey Lewis' unannounced "visit" to Lew Ayres' house, those creeping floating Glick vampires, and of course Reggie Nalder's shock appearances -- remain unsurpassed. The only scene in the remake which came close was the creepy night scene on the school bus. Otherwise...

All in all, I'd call this one a tie. How about you guys?

I've not seen the new one but you're actually the first person I've heard say anything particularly good about it. Most of us are probably biased toward the old one because we grew up with it.

"You'll enjoy Mr. Barlow... and he will enjoy you as well!"

Tee-hee.

I read the novel like ten or fifteen years ago, and enjoyed it inmensely. I had always a thing for it because the original Salem's Lot mini was one of those TV programs I wasn't allowed to see in their time for being too young. And both my parents being school teachers, they took that kind of rules very seriously.

I finally saw said mini a few years ago, not many, and found it very good but not as scary as I expected. Not anybody's fault, it's typical when you have that kind of expectations. What horror movie can surpass the imagination of an eight year old trying to reproduce the movie he has been denied? I still have to find one that does.

BTW, the nitpicker in me needs to mention there's yet another Salem's Lot movie, a sequel of the Soul-Mason version. It's called A Return to Salem's Lot, and was made by nobody else than Larry Cohen. And despite being rather silly, it has some great script ideas, such as turning the village into a commnity entirely composed of vampires living peacefully.

I, found the original far more frightening than the newer version. But only partly because I remember the original from so long ago. You just cant substitute genuine horror with better effects. Really sad case in point - "The Haunting"

Another example is the original Catpeople. The original is frightening and witty without any special effects at all. The 1980s remake has very gory effects and nudity but is neither frightening nor sexy. Everything is so overdone that it loses its flavor.

My father, of blessed memory, and I, both walked out of the CAT PEOPLE remake when we saw the special effects "cat tear's the guy's arm off" scene.

Movie producers could learn a lot from chefs. Food that is overdone or underdone has no flavor at all.
