Spanish press announced Naschy (age 75) died today (December the 1st) of panchreatic cancer.

I always found his output quite trashy and beliebed him vastly overrated, but in the recent years I learned to appreciate his efforts to produce genre work in a period and an industry where it was almost impossible, and to value his occasional triumphs (such as the Spanish giallo "Los ojos azules de la muņeca rota") and enduring enthusiasm.
The news of his death are indeed shocking, as Naschy has been seen, as recently as a few weeks ago, in film festivals collecting awards for his career. He leaves an unfinished film, "The apostle", while "La herencia Valdemar", a Lovecraft-inspired film in which he plays a supporting role, is expected to open next year. |

Like Neville, I never quite got the fandom surrounding Naschy, although I did get a kick out of his hyperactive werewolf schtick in Frankenstein's Bloody Terror.

Lousy movie (even worse than I remembered) but the picture quality is great.
Non-Naschy fans: lots of other bad Independent International films are available in their entirety here, including the infamous Dracula vs. Frankenstein with Lon Chaney, J. Carroll Naish, and Zandor Vorkov!

This reminds me that a few months ago I caught "The werewolf and the Yeti" on late TV. It must be one of Naschy's cheesiest films, with the Spanish Pyrenees (not far away from where I live!) doubling for the Himalayas. The whole thing is extremely fun to watch, specially towards the end, when it becomes a full fledged Fu-Manchu adventure, complete with sadistic oriental women and a hero (Naschy, who else?) that needs to dropkick his way out of a fortress.
