I think it's the "I'm so kewl, you're old-fashioned" line of thought. Anything earlier than 25 years ago (Or before someone was born) is irrelavant and out-dated.
An example of TV drama to movie comedy can be found in DRAGNET. There wasn't any reason I could see to camp it up.

"Starsky and Hutch" was another one. They never seem to do well so I don't understand the logic of it. The older people who grew up with it are irritated by it becoming a comedy and the younger people don't get the jokes. It seems the better path is more along the lines of "The Naked Gun" films. You spoof the tropes without their being a direct correlation to an actual series.

Interesting how Starsky and Hutch and Dragnet weren't big hits, but The Fugitive — which played it completely straight — was a monster hit, and a Best Picture nominee (in truth, I might dispute that nomination, but it was a hell of a good movie).
You'd think Hollywood would learn.
Wait, did I really just say that? |

| My guess is that some ofthose TV shows are sodated that Hollywood doesn't know how to sell them anymore. Their solution to the problem, to turn the adaptations into vehicles for the comedians of the era. I understand the anger of those who still worship the shows and feel cheated. |

| The producers of these movies are so self absorbed and condecending that they have forgotten why it was that people watched the shows to begin with. Hense the failures of the movies both critically and financially. Its like Toyota. They were so hell bent on taking over the world that they forgot why people bought toyotas in the first place, and that amnesia jumped up and bit them. |

But that is only a part of the problem. People now don't want or expect the same things than when the shows came out. I've been catching reruns of Miami vice lately. It's sort of interesting to watch now because of the odd visual style and the fashion, but as a TV cop drama it fails painfully short, the characters' issues never go beyond cliché. Michael Mann's 2006 movie is far from a success, but at least he tried to make it all about the characters. |
