Or, at least, deserved to be nominated.
Frederic March won (actually tied) for Dr. Jekyll and Mister Hyde. Sigourney Weaver was nominated for Aliens. But these are exceptions. Up until recently, performances in this genre were usually overlooked completely.
I thought Stanley Ridges did a stellar job in the Karloff-Lugosi thriller Black Friday. Talk about a Jekyll-and-Hyde performance!
Sigourney Weaver's performance in the original Alien was arguably better than her work in the sequel (in fact, Alien featured terrific acting across the board, not to mention great direction, but nobody in Hollywood that year seemed to notice.)
A shout-out to Julie Harris in The Haunting, maybe?
And if Nicole Kidman's performance in The Others wasn't worthy of a nomination, certainly Fionnula Flanagan's was.
