Here comes the next generation in 3-D. First, it was Avatar, then it was Alice in Wonderland.

Now this:

I have to admit, my knowledge about 3-D movies is limited. Didn't studios try this before? Lauching a bunch of 3-D movies(Jaws 3-D being on of them). But it didn't quite bring in the crowds. So they went back to 2-D.

How did that shake out?

And is 3-D here to stay?

The current 3D wave is the third. The first was in the 50s and the 2nd in the 80s. The current one will probably have more staying power as using CGI for the 3D effects is probably more effective than the technology used on the earlier versions. The fact that the two examples that you mentioned are major releases by respected directors bears this out. In the earlier waves 3D was pretty much restricted to b movie and exploitation fare.

Still, I don't think studios will keep supporting 3D movies for much longer. Now they all are jumping in the 3D bandwagon because Avatar was a hit. But what will happen when one or more of these new 3D films bite the dust? Some of them already looked quite crappy before being turned into 3D films, I wouldn't expect them to be that succesful at the box office.

And if 3D is here to stay... what will happen to current domestic formats? Will we get 3D DVDs and glasses or just plain 2D films?

I don't think 3D DVDs will be a problem:

And with this ringing endorsement:

I know Belgium isn't a hop-skip-and a jump away from Spain. But maybe you can get you're hands on this:

Mmm... the James Cameron endorsement will be as good as the success of his next movies. We'll see. I don't plan updating my hardware anytime soon. I'm using a plain 28' TV (no HD, no TDT, no 5:1 audio) with a DVD+DivX+TDT combo. It's cheap and gives a reasonable performance.

I can see a future on 3D press, though. Specially in girlie magazines.

Holy Mare!!!!!

Stereoscopic film technology looks set to take a fresh leap into the unknown thanks to veteran Italian director Tinto Brass. Where James Cameron's Avatar took viewers to a faraway planet, Brass plans to escort them straight to the bedroom. He is preparing what he claims will be the world's first ever 3D pornographic feature.

Brass, now 76, remains best known for his sweaty 1979 epic Caligula, although he later accused producers of adding hardcore sex scenes to the movie without his consent. Yesterday he hinted that his latest project would be an overhaul of the earlier film. His intention, he said, was to "revisit an abandoned project about a Roman emperor that was ruined by Americans, and go from there". Production is due to start in May or June.

ROFL If this doesn't ruin 3D, nothing will.

(and well, great minds think alike)

And Ken should rejoice too, if the trend to convert old movies into 3D continues (so far I've heard of LOTR, Titanic and Star Wars) we may end up having a Xanadu 3D DVD. Or a Prayer of the Rollerboys 3D.

The first wave of 3-D (in the 50's) was in response to the success of television; I think the second was in response to the success of home video. The 80's films all had those red-green analglyphic (sp) lenses that mostly gave people headaches--that's what you get when you buy 3D DVDs now, and the 3D sucks. I think the latest 3D trend is again a way of getting people to the theatre.

Most of the theatrical 3D I've seen in recent movies uses the polarized lenses, which is a much smoother method. If the televisions mentioned in the article use this, the 3D might be worthwhile, though theatrical attendance would take another hit. Maybe we'd go back to Smell-O-Vision then.
