This is from Ken's review of On Deadly Ground:

Director Seagal: "OK, Michael, you’re the Bad Guy. So act really, like, Evil here."#8232;
Caine: "But look, Steven. You know that, in my character’s mind, he’s not the bad guy. To him, he’s the hero, see. He believes totally in what he’s doing, and in his right to do it. In fact, to him, your character is the bad guy, not he."
#8232;Director Seagal, after staring at Caine for a very long time without changing expression: "OK, Michael, you’re the Bad Guy. So act really Evil here. Oh, and more Awe when he sees me enter the room."

And from a Michael Caine interview by the onion this year:

AVC: You’ve spent a good chunk of your career playing likeable criminals, killers, and cads. What’s your secret to making those kinds of characters appealing?
MC: Well, nobody’s a criminal to himself. You see, I never play a criminal like a bad person. It’s like the con man in Dirty Rotten Scoundrels: He’s fooling old ladies for their money and all that. But he never saw himself as [a criminal]. He just saw himself as some kind of romantic figure, which is funny.
