My first directive would be slapping Abrams' neck everytime he allows a flash into the shot.
Other than that, I think he did very well on his first Star Trek movie, so he has free reign. |

But, what if the flash was from her:

Woah. Do ya have to ask?
Ya know, I really, reallywould love to see a visit from Dr. Who. So, a cross dimentional story would hurt?

Ideally, they'll do something entirely original. I'd hate to think they went to all this trouble separating Star Trek from the big dead weight of its continuity to rehash what they already did. However, if they must reuse elements from the existing canon, I can think of two ideas which dovetail well with the most recent movie's story.
1. Sybok. Yes, you read that right, I'm suggesting taking something from STV. I assume he'd actually gained a following on Vulcan, which was banished en masse by their authorities for teaching what they consider heresy. Now that there are so few Vulcans still in existence, they could decide it's necessary to repatriate Sybok and his people because they need to expand their gene pool. I think they could get a good story out of the Vulcans having to reintegrate these people they'd rejected. They could also address why they embrace logic so unquestioningly.
2. Unification. The Vulcans begin to reach out to the Romulans, as they share common ancestors. They could offer to work with them on a solution to the supernova they know will take place, and try to establish some kind of relations with them. This would be a larger-scale version of the same idea as them dealing with Sybok, plus it adds tension with the Federation over forming a separate relationship with one of their enemies. Perhaps the Romulans offer to take the entire remaining Vulcan population into their territory, leading to a reversal of the story of taking in Sybok. If Leonard Nimoy were willing to continue in the role of Spock, he could be portrayed facilitating this relationship. Otherwise he could be described doing so off-camera.
You know Grand Funk, don't you? The wild, shirtless lyrics of Mark Farner? The bong-rattling bass of Mel Schacher? The ... adequate drumwork of Don Brewer? |
