Since we're going to go through a significant dry spell here (see previous note), I thought it might be a good idea for people to suggest favorite pieces that folks might want to give a first or even second look at.
For my part, let me first nominate the woefully ignored B-Fest diaries written by my good friend Andrew Muchoney. Although not traditional reviews, they ar great pieces and chock full of some of the most hilarious stuff to be found here:
http://www.Jabootu.com/bfest99master.htm
http://www.Jabootu.com/muchoney2000.htm
Other than that, anything written by somebody else than me is probably a good start. From our first generation of guest reviewers, Douglas Milroy's The Beast and Exorcist II pieces remain some of the best and well-regarded posted here, along with Jason MacIsaac's Boxing Helena and Highlander II pieces.
Then there are great pieces by Pip (Freddy Got Fingered), Lianna Skywalker (Battlefield Earth), Chris Magyar (Die! Die! Die!), Jessica (Xanadu) and lots more. If you just read the pieces by these guys, you'd be in very good shape. There are really quite a few of them, and they're all great.
Oh, and special mention to the great "Down Under" reviews Liz Kingsley did for us. They can be found in the Reviews section under Down Under. And don't forget Apostic's sadly discontinued site, B-Notes, which we still have the honor of hosting:
http://www.Jabootu.com/acolytes/bnotes/
I probably shouldn't hawk any of my own pieces, but I rather like my reviews for Sweet November and Isn't She Great.

| Among the reviews I remember having read first, I'd recommend Lianna Skywalker's take on Battlefield Earth and yours on Bad girls. |

Actually, Bad Girls is Jason's.
Like I said, if you stick with the stuff I didn't write, you're in great shape.

Ouch. Anyway, take care and find new interests. People can't live on bad movies, as many Hollywood careers prove.
Hope to see you around now and then. |

Actually, I'll probably frequent the message board more, and will be restarting the blog in a day or two.

| The R.O.T.O.R. review is a long-time favorite of mine, especially since I've seen the original on cable several times and been awestruck in a "what were they thinking?" kind of way. If folks who read the review haven't seen the actual movie, I think they're missing out; it helps to hear all that badly-dubbed audio and see just how ridiculous some scenes, like the "robot walks through chairs" scene, really look. |

I reread the recap of The Brain From Planet Arous last week. The lines generated by the mimicking Gor competition that you and Andrew had still crack me up.

For some unknown reason, "The Uninvited" just makes me giggle. I swear I have to track this thing down sometime.
Have a good rest, Ken!

What I reccommend is to start with the first review, then go to the last review, then back up to the second review, back down to the next to the last, and continue in this fashion until you get to the middle. Then go to the nuggets page and read all the BFest notebooks, Superfriends Reviews, and Hitchhiker reviews. Then read everything else. :)
Everyone should read the "Maginificent Obsession" review if for no other reason than to find out what Jabootu really is. ;)

Oddly, I just re-read the Exorcist II review a few days ago and then watched the movie. I have a habit of looking on IMDB any time I watch something, and the trivia section quotes Doug's review almost verbatim (specifically, the fact that over a given period there are twenty or something shots of Richard Burton not moving or speaking). Is it luck?? I think not!!
I've been working my way through the whole Nuggets page- there's a ton of good stuff there.
Coming soon- Eraserhead: The Musical!! |

I reccomend chasing Sextette with Sincerely Yours, hi-larious. I also love Doug's barely concealed disgust and each and every person involved with The Beast.

Superman IV, Star Trek V, and most of all, the Jaws series.
I especially love the Jaws reviews, because it proves that Ken knows how to give credit where it's due even while ripping the movie apart. This makes his criticisms that much more believable. Hell, I wouldn't mind seeing more analyses of whole series. If I was any good, I'd try it myself. |

Jaws, definitely. You said up front that you didn't know how interesting your review of a GOOD movie would be. I had some very minor quibbles with a couple of details, and I do mean MINOR. So it's a 98 instead of a 100. But your review of Jaws may be the most intelligent and insightful review I've ever read of the film.
The Beast, Exorcist II, both Battlefield Earth reviews, Dungeons and Dragons, and Fair Game. (And no, sorry, I won't put you out of your misery, callous bastard that I am.) |
