Please take a look at this and don't just dismiss it.

Anyone who's been on the Jabootu boards for a while might remember that back when I was a mere Hecklerprince, I got my start digging into a fanfiction called Eiga Sentai Scanranger, or Movie Task Force Scanranger in case you don't know Japanese. I chose it because I thought the theme fit well with a web site that exalts in the very worst the world of cinema has to offer, and because it was, frankly, one of the most self-assured but confusing pieces of junk I'd ever seen. During the course of my original series of examinations, however, I came to see the author not as a pompous hack, but as a dedicated fan who simply didn't dedicate as much energy to realizing what he was saying as saying it. (don't stop now, I'm just getting to the point) As a Christmas gift of sorts to Vince Jones that he might see his ongoing project through another's eyes and my friends here at Jabootu's Bad Movie Dimension should they have inclination, I present the first part of the Eiga Sentai Scanranger Mistake Guide.

It might not be that amusing as most of the reviews around here, and if that's what you've come looking for I apologize. For your convenience a character guide and general list of mistakes is located at the bottom of this document. Put your feet up, relax, and enjoy, or just feel free to point your fingers and laugh at the madness that is hk6909.

Eiga Sentai Scanranger Mistake Guide

Episode 1-World Broadcast Premiere! Soldiers of the Silver Screen (called “World Broadcast Premiere! Soldiers of the Silver Screen Are Born!” on the main page)
Summary: What’s to say about the pilot episode?
Monster: KuroOctopus
URL: http://www.geocities.com/tetsuokurata/episode1a.html
Mistakes, Mysteries, and Weird Stuff
-The headline calls this “the extended version” even after the synopsized version on the main page was taken out.
-The opening narration said that CJU was known for excellence in both academics and athletics, then said in the very same sentence that it focused strictly on academics.
-Students were looking at the results of an exam on a bulletin board, but these days test scores are confidential information, and had been since before 1997.
-How did Alex know about MAYHEM’s imminent return?
-B.C. thought that “Scanranger” was a corny name, which seems unlikely to be his reaction as he’s supposed to be a dyed-in-the-wool fan of the sentai shows Scanranger is based on.
-When KuroOctopus attacked, it supposedly ran into Nick and kept him from finishing a question he was asking, but he did finish his sentence first.
-When KuroOctopus attacked, the narration said the rangers were knocked out, then said they were losing consciousness.
-Five times during KuroOctopus’ attack, “tentacles” was spelled without a second “t”.
-From what movie did PinkScanner summon up a giant stick of gum?
Personal Rants: The first thing the villains did when they arrived on Earth was destroy a space station. That’s just like what happened in…Jetman!

Episode 2-Crocodile Rocked
Summary: Despite the title, MAYHEM unleashes an alligator monster that can turn people into same with its bite, including Toni.
Monster: KuroGator
URL: http://www.geocities.com/tetsuokurata/episodetwo.html
Mistakes, Mysteries, and Weird Stuff
-The monster’s name was spelled both KuroGator and Kuro-gator.
-The Scanrangers knew who Anark Key was, as well as that he’d be carrying the cure to KuroGator’s poison, even though they had never met him or heard about him before.
-When the rangers confronted KuroGator for the second time, he said that Toni had surely become a mutant alligator by then. In the previous scene, her diagnosis had said that it would be six hours before her transformation completed, and no indication was given of such a large amount of time passing between the rangers leaving base and engaging KuroGator.
-Kunio didn’t know how Toni had gotten over the monster’s poison, even though Nick had somewhat laboriously explained that he knocked out Key and took his place to (successfully) steal the antidote.
-The link to the next episode goes to the fourth instead of the third.
Personal Rants: Early in, Blackorg declares, “Failure is something I do not tolerate!” I’m perfectly willing to observe many of the “unwritten rules” of sentai (no using giant robots until there’s a giant monster to fight them with, that kind of thing), but this really bugs me. It’s only their first loss and he’s already saying he doesn’t tolerate failure. Ug, Vixen and Key never beat Scanranger once and their boss who doesn’t tolerate failure still has them around doing his dirty work after forty stories. This ties into my rant in episode four.

Episode 3-Model Misbehavior
Summary: Vixen and KuroSiren disguise themselves as supermodels and take control of Vin and Kunio in a plot to breed an army of minions with the campus guys.
Monster: KuroSiren
URL: http://www.geocities.com/tetsuokurata/episodethree.html
Mistakes, Mysteries, and Weird Stuff
-Vin and Kunio talked about becoming models to their friends after meeting the disguised MAYHEM ladies, and apparently Vixen was recruiting men that way, but she and KuroSiren never extended an offer like that to the two rangers.
-Why did Vixen attack the Scanrangers with the help of the mind-controlled Red and Yellow, and then just let the three of them go? Vixen talked about having a better plan for them, but this was never cleared up.
-How did Nick know the KuroSiren’s kiss was what entranced men?
-The episode of Jetman Nick referenced was actually the ninth (with Raita‘s girlfriend), not the eighth (with the diamond monster).

Episode 4-The Confrontation! Future Master of the World!
Summary: Blackorg takes on the Scanrangers himself to keep them distracted while Ug and Key steal something from the campus. With their confidence broken by their crushing defeat, Alex engages them in mock combat which somehow fixes them up just fine.
Monster: None
URL: http://www.geocities.com/tetsuokurata/episode4.html
Mistakes, Mysteries, and Weird Stuff
-Blackorg talked about how MAYHEM had slaughtered the villains from Power Rangers, implying them to be real in Scanrangers’ universe, but other episodes make them seem like they’re only a TV show.
-Nick tapped an emblem on his costume to activate his movie powers, but the rangers never had to do this before and never had to again (Personal Rant: What do snare traps have to do with special effects?).
-When Key and Ug arrived on campus it was said that “The two were to distract the movie task force as they fight Blackorg.” In fact they were there to steal a piece of technology while Blackorg kept the Scanrangers too busy to notice their presence.
-B.C. noted that when Blackorg assumed his monstrous form, he became “some mix of that creature from ‘The Relic..’” Making it sound as if he was “a mix” of only one thing.
-How did Alex know about Blackorg’s “subliminal messages”?
Personal Rants: Consider the premise of this episode: Blackorg, the almighty villain boss, personally attacks Scanranger and defeats them soundly, even turning their strongest weapon back on them with ease. He does this to distract the Scanrangers while his henchmen steal something to make their monsters powerful enough to beat Scanranger. This creates a problematic question: if the villains have a leader who’s that powerful and is willing to take matters into his own hands this early into things, why do they need to power up their monsters and why doesn’t he finish the job? And what about Blackorg’s conflicting attitude toward killing the rangers? He always yells about how useless his henchmen are because they always lose, yet Blackorg tells them to back off when they’re actually on the verge of beating Scanranger because the time isn’t right. It weakens the story if the Scanrangers constantly get to survive fights only because the story would end if the bad guys finished the job. In true sentai, the villain leader usually doesn’t start out so powerful or at least doesn’t call attention to how strong he is by not taking the field himself until later.

Episode 5-With Maliss Towards All
Summary: The Scanrangers fight off Ug and KuroKahn with their renewed confidence, but their troubles are far from over. An old rival of Vin’s is spreading the bad word about them. With the stolen device from last episode, MAYHEM is able to create Byte, and he turns Vin’s rival into KuroDragon, the first giant monster!
Monster: KuroKahn
URL: http://www.geocities.com/tetsuokurata/episode5.html
Mistakes, Mysteries, and Weird Stuff
-When congratulating Ug, Blackorg said, “you and Anark Key gave me the opportunity to distract Scanranger.” The diversion had been to keep Scanranger off Ug and Key’s backs.
-Blackorg went on to make it sound like the metal stolen from CJU by his henchmen was what brought Byte to life; later Byte himself was said to be what was stolen.
-Why would Nick need a driver’s license to sit in a centrifuge?
-Although only Vin resembled Alex’s kidnapper, for some reason Vin, Kunio and B.C. were all brought in for questioning. Then, equally mysteriously, B.C. was let off the hook and went to investigate with Nick and Toni while Vin and Kunio were detained. What was the reasoning behind all that?
-Alex asked how Lord Maliss knew about Project Paramount, which is supposedly top secret. He was a villain with superhuman powers, probably in the service of Blackorg, who was originally a Project Paramount member and Alex knows that. Would someone who’s part of a task force to fight an evil organization with superhuman powers really assume that some villain with superhuman powers wouldn’t be part of it, when they’ve never encountered super-beings who were free agents?
-The officer holding Vin and Kunio received a phone call saying that Alex was dead. Where did the call come from, and how did it indicate that Vin and Kunio were guilty of Alex’s murder if they’d been locked up for some time?
Personal Rants: During this story, the Scanrangers run into an old enemy of Vin’s who is spreading bad publicity about civilian casualties and damage to school property resulting from their battles. I figure it’s supposed to be unwarranted slander, although I’m not quite convinced his allegations might not be true, especially with at least one untold Scanranger story. Besides, people getting hurt is the difference between sentai and Power Rangers. Whether they’re true or not, I was worried by the Scanrangers’ reactions; Kunio compared Malcolm’s reporting to the National Enquirer, and Vin told him to focus on the bright side and not on the problem. The second one almost makes it sound like Vin really is guilty and is trying to duck responsibility. Even if the allegations aren’t true, making fun of the person who brought them up and railing at him to ignore the problem and look only at the bright side aren’t very heroic or responsible things to do in return.

Episode 6-Hooray for Hollywood Vehicles! Enter: Thunder Dolby THX!
Summary: The Scanrangers are faced with their first giant monster. When their new Hollywood Vehicles fail to topple it, they believe in their favorite movies and form Thunder Dolby THX.
Monster: KuroDragon
URL: http://www.geocities.com/tetsuokurata/episode6.html
Mistakes, Mysteries, and Weird Stuff
-“Cell” was spelled “shell.”
-It’s unknown why Green, Pink and Blue stayed around KuroDragon and didn’t try to put up a fight. Maybe they couldn’t teleport because Pink had given her teleporter to Alex, but they could’ve run away, probably called the Bijou Bikes, or tried to defend themselves.
-Alex planned to lie low for a while and let MAYHEM think she was still dead, so Vin and Kunio still should have been suspects in her murder, especially after breaking out of jail.
Personal Rants: In the previous episode, Alex had mentioned an extra credit take-home test as part of their g-force testing. Apparently, she was actually talking about the rangers believing in their favorite movies and unlocking the ability to form Thunder Dolby. What the heck????
-I thought there was a possibility for an interesting subplot here. As noted above, Alex isn’t going to reveal that she’s okay yet, and as a result Vin and Mikey should still have been in trouble for her “death,” or at least for breaking out of jail, which I’m pretty sure is a crime in and of itself. Even if we assume Project Paramount did a little hacking to clear their records, unless they shipped the campus cops off to Ice Station Zebra to keep them quiet, said cops should still be suspicious of Vin and Kunio and probably keep an even closer eye on them. This could’ve led to one following the rangers around, trying to find out their secret, and maybe eventually becoming the new Scanranger.
-The ordeal with KuroDragon and Alex’s supposed death “tested [the rangers] beyond what they could bear..” I don’t see that. They seemed at most sort of upset to hear about Alex’s death. If that had really torn at their resolve, I would’ve shown them despairing but Vin getting them back on track saying that this is exactly what Alex was getting them ready for so they can’t let her down now, or something along those lines.
Huh?
The Scanrangers, preparing to rush off to battle KuroDragon.
B.C.: “"Blackorg's calling us out again, guys, so let's pick-”
Nick: “Don't say it, B.C. We got the joke..”

Episode 7-Kunio’s Excellent Adventure in Babysitting
Summary: Kunio is stuck babysitting his niece on the day of a big anime festival, but it’s all for the best since MAYHEM is hatching a plot to breed monsters at the zoo, which just happens to be where they go on their little field trip.
Monster: KuroAnaconda
URL: http://www.geocities.com/tetsuokurata/episode7.html
Mistakes, Mysteries, and Weird Stuff
-At one point Kay was said to be Kunio’s sister’s niece, but all the rest of the time she was said to be his sister’s daughter.
-Vixen explained that multiple zoo animals had been given pills that would change them into CyberCreatures (while telling Blackorg how the technology worked, though the idea is strong that he’s overseen more than a couple planetary takeovers with copious use of CyberCreatures), although only one became a monster.
-The snake that became KuroAnaconda was kept in an open pit.
-Vin knew Kunio had been to the reptile house without being told.
-After protesting the idea of taking Kay to the anime festival before because that kind of thing isn’t healthy for children, the other Scanrangers said nothing when her mother suggested taking her there at the end.
-Kunio pretended nothing had happened when he took Kay to the zoo when meeting her mother at the end, although a snake monster attacking the zoo and chasing everyone out would draw considerable attention.

Episode 8-Gangsta’s Paradise Lost
Summary: A monster with a dirty mouth overloads BlueScanner’s clean humor powers, but he plugs his ears and comes back to destroy it and prove a friend’s innocence.
Monster: KuroGangsta
URL: http://www.geocities.com/tetsuokurata/episode8.html
Mistakes, Mysteries, and Weird Stuff
-Kunio talked about realizing that Blackorg had been trying to distract them before as if they’d known all the time.
-The ambulance was said to take the getaway driver to the hospital, then immediately said it didn’t.
-When did Omar pick up a gun during the break-in?
-When B.C. paid a visit to Omar in prison, it was described like this: “Back on campus, B.C. sees Omar at the 2nd precinct.” Wouldn’t the CJU campus be in the 2nd precinct instead the other way around, like it seems to say?
-How did KuroGangasta use his “hood” to “zap an eye beam”?
-The Scanrangers are supposedly protective of their secret identities, but when he heard a monster was in the police station, B.C. told an officer he was “a trained professional.”
-When he attacked KuroGangsta, B.C. was said to be the second in command, but according to the front page that’s Nick.
-B.C. was nearly shot by the Camzooka while just walking through the base.
-B.C. was sure the tape recorder he found would prove Omar’s innocence with no way of knowing what was on it.
-When B.C. got a good look at KuroGangsta, he said it was just as he thought, that the aliens had made one of the burglars into a monster. Where did B.C. get that idea?
-B.C. told Omar the robber had gone to court, but all of the burglars, especially the one who had become KuroGangsta, had been killed over the course of the episode.
-How did the police hearing the burglars’ voices prove Omar wasn’t one of them?
Personal Rants: Toni’s claim that Thunder Dolby wouldn’t exist if Byte hadn’t been stolen is dubious, especially that it was “for the best.” If MAYHEM’s monsters couldn’t grow, the damage they would be capable of doing would be greatly reduced.
-Do the Scanrangers really need a new super weapon to kill regular-sized monsters already? They already had the Cinemasher.
-The subplot about Omar feeling prejudiced against is awfully underdeveloped. We don’t even hear what ethnic group he belongs to or where he’s from that might make others disparage him.
Huh?
Toni, trying to cheer up Kunio after failing his class project.
Toni: “Let's go downtown and check out that new sci-fi flick at the Leewood Park Superplex.. Anything else I can get you, buddy?”
Kunio: “A chin..”
Toni: “How about some hot milk?”
That’s humor…?
Omar and B.C. patching things up.
Omar: “You're all right! You stuck in there with me..very few people has ever done that for me..you didn't give up..Your friends are all that, and a bag of chips..”
B.C.: “No..Nacho Cheese tortillas, actually..”

Episode 9-Good Morrow! The Joker is Riled!
Summary: The ghost of the CJU theater turns out to be a runaway MAYHEM monster.
Monster: KuroJoker
URL: http://www.geocities.com/tetsuokurata/episode9.html
Mistakes, Mysteries, and Weird Stuff
-One student auditioning was rejected for doing the “to be or not to be” soliloquy from Hamlet, even though the director told the students to “do your favorite Shakesperian scene.” Even more bizarrely, B.C. was allowed to do the same soliloquy and was accepted for it. Perhaps even more bizarrely than that, the director accepted all five Scanrangers even though only B.C. had auditioned.
-Vin remarked that appearing in the production would look good on their resumes, but only B.C.’s chosen field (theater arts) would seem to apply.
-When Vin went to find Nick, the narration referred to Nick as the fourth in command, but according to the profiles on the main page, he’s the second in command (Personal Rant: When I started reading this series, the main page said B.C. was the second in command, which I really, really wouldn’t recommend).
-Even though he hadn’t called and they agreed to let Vin get Nick alone, all the other rangers came running into Nick’s room after Vin knocked him out.
-It was never explained why KuroJoker left MAYHEM, how (or why) he got to Earth if Blackorg had only just returned, and why he returned to MAYHEM so quickly if he had been hiding from them for years.
Personal Rants: Maybe it’s just my bizarre tastes, but I would’ve liked to have heard the story of the guy at the beginning and why he was a threat to KuroJoker’s evil master. Especially as Joker had so little loyalty to that evil master that he fled MAYHEM and hid out in the theater for years.

Episode 10-Revenge of the CyberCreature!
Summary: KuroSiren’s boyfriend tries to get revenge on Nick.
Monster: KuroModel
URL: http://www.geocities.com/tetsuokurata/episode10.html
Mistakes, Mysteries, and Weird Stuff
-The reporter Takeshi was watching contradicted themselves: they said the Scarangers’ goal was unknown, but went on to say that when they accomplished their goal, they vanished.
-The MAYHEM officers pretended to be the good guys when they sent KuroModel to take on Scanranger, which is confusing since all other CyberCreatures (including, it seemed, KuroModel) were as evil as their masters.
-KuroModel wanted revenge against Nick for killing KuroSiren, but it had been Kunio who destroyed her with a Warp Speed Smash. Furthermore, he wanted the Scanrangers to die lingering deaths, as KuroSiren had, but she had died quickly.
-KuroModel stood Toni up for a date when it would’ve been a perfect chance to capture another Scanranger.
-Alex seemed worried that someone would infer that the Scanrangers (her students) might be revealing their secret identities by talking to her (one of their teachers). If she was worried about someone overhearing them while they discussed Scanranger matters in her campus office, couldn’t they have gone someplace secure to have the discussion? (Personal Rant: Or shut the door?)
-In the end Nick told Toni that she’d saved the others numerous times, but unless he was talking about stories that were never written there was never a time before, since or during that episode where she saved everyone else’s skins.
-Up to this episode, Nick used a projector to make use of his holograms, but afterward it seemed to become an innate ability with no explanation as to why.

Episode 11-Arno Benedict-The Dimensional Wandering Fiend(!)
Summary: Since his own henchmen are incompetent, Blackorg decides to hire some outside talent to destroy Scanranger for him. Namely, the infamous mercenary Arno Benedict and his Brigade. Then for some reason he sends Ug and a monster to attack an amusement park.
Monster: KuroPirate
URL: http://www.geocities.com/tetsuokurata/episode11.html
Mistakes, Mysteries, and Weird Stuff
-Vixen remarked that despite she and the other lieutenants having Blackorg’s favor, he turns around and hires Benedict to do their job. Why would he replace them and spend so much time blustering about their incompetence if they had his favor?
-The Scanrangers split into two groups, one to deal with KuroPirate with their Hollywood Vehicles while the others battled the MAYHEM members aboard their flying ship. It’s a bit strange that they didn’t all attack the ship as they couldn’t have known KuroPirate would enlarge, and it might not have if they hadn’t used their mecha.
-KuroPirate somehow enlarged itself without Byte.
-A force field surrounded the rangers when the Brigade appeared, but it was immediately forgotten.
-The point of Ug and KuroPirate’s attack was unclear. The Scanrangers didn’t seem weakened from it, and Benedict announced his presence and introduced his team before attacking, so it couldn’t have been to get the rangers to lower their guard so Benedict could launch a surprise attack.
Personal Rants: Credit where it’s due--Vince Jones is one of the few people who knows the correct saying is, “you’ve got another think coming.”
Huh?
The Rangers discussing the destruction from their latest battle. Is the stuff they’re talking about supposed to be really happening?
Vin: “It's a good thing that our crew has enough dough to make repairs to this park..But can you imagine how much it'll cost Tokyo every year to get their city back together after a monster nearly destroys it? No offense, B.C.…”
B.C.: “None taken..The Tri-state area had it's equal share of disasters, especially being invaded by aliens and asteroids..definitely a deep impact, indeed..”

Episode 12-Back to Action! The Shining Silver Hero!
Summary: The Scanrangers manage to overcome the Brigade, but are felled by a blow from behind and implanted with insidious devices. KuroPirate soon strikes again and it looks bad for the rangers, but Kunio’s new friend, Takeshi, luckily regains his memories of being the original Scanranger and helps destroy the monster.
Monster: KuroParrot, KuroPirate again
URL: http://www.geocities.com/tetsuokurata/episode12.html
Mistakes, Mysteries, and Weird Stuff
-GreenScanner used his special effects powers to tap into a Rocky movie (which are about boxing. Just FYI) and then used the scene he’d tapped to use wrestling moves on his opponent. Making this even more bizarre, his fighting style is wrestling anyway.
-Takeshi broke bones of several of the muggers, which seemed quite excessive.
-After fighting off the muggers, Takeshi asked why they had started trouble with him, but one had made it pretty clear that they intended to steal his watch.
-Benedict boasted that seeing KuroPirate fight Thunder Dolby had revealed the mecha’s weaknesses to him. If that was KuroPirate’s mission, it’s unknown why it fled when confronted by the Hollywood Vehicles in the previous episode, as they would have surely combined and fought if it had stayed.
Personal Rants: Benedict told the Scanrangers he intended to “steal their lives,” he was apparently later revealed to mean steal their movie powers. Red claimed monsters had tried to do that previously in reply. Huh?
-When Takeshi regains his memories of being a Scanranger, he “remembers most importantly the name..MAYHEM!” Is that really the most important thing? Would he not be interested in stopping any other would-be conquerors of humanity? (Takeshi: “Get ready to taste some Kamen Rider-style butt-whooping, forces of MAYHEM!” Monster: “I don’t work for MAYHEM, I work for Nejirejia!” Takeshi: “Oh. Never mind.”)

Episode 13-Debut of the Demolisher
Summary: The Brigade unveils their ultimate weapon, the evil mecha Demolisher. It overcomes Thunder Dolby but is driven off by SilverScanner. Unfortunately, the Brigade manages to capture the rest of the team.
Monster: Demolisher
URL: http://www.geocities.com/tetsuokurata/episode13.html
Mistakes, Mysteries, and Weird Stuff
-In “Revenge of the CyberCreature” Benedict had claimed to have killed Dark Spectre (a Power Ranger villain) with the Demolisher, which was only nearing completion as this episode began (Personal Rant: I’m not even going to touch the conceit of this mecha losing to Scanranger’s little starter robots, but being able to wipe out a planet-sized, cosmically powerful villain).
-Vixen said she’d never seen anything like the Demolisher (a giant robot) before, despite the Scanrangers routinely battling their monsters with a giant robot.
-Alex told Vin about a picture of SilverScanner he’d seen before as if it had been established in-story, which it wasn’t.
-During the flashback, Alex’s husband asked why their friend Damien was talking in riddles, but it was pretty clear that some evil being was exalting in its freedom.
-The deputy mayor of New York City made a comment about contacting the Fantastic Four when Demolisher attacked. If they exist in the Scanranger universe, where were they when a giant robot started tearing up the city?
-The Scanrangers said “ROLL ‘EM!” to form Thunder Dolby, but the command is “SUPERIMPOSE!”
-In response to Green asking if they could heal Thunder Dolby (Personal Rant: Whatever that means for a manmade robot), Red replied that “there seems to be some electrical interference that keeps us from counter attacking..”
-Previously Benedict had said watching KuroPirate and Thunder Dolby fight had given him knowledge of the mecha’s weaknesses, but in the battle this episode he said that the Brigade had destroyed a parallel universe’s Thunder Dolby and learned the information that way (Personal Rant: It didn’t seem like the Brigade was taking advantage of Thunder Dolby’s weaknesses anyhow, it seemed like they had the stronger mecha and Scanranger was at a disadvantage because they couldn’t use Thunder Dolby’s best weapons).
-“Turbine” was spelled “turban.”
Huh?
Downtime.
Narration: “Most of the team are studying, looking over their homework assignments from their other classes, and the others were studying.”

Episode 14-Marooned!
Summary: The captured Scanrangers’ powers are drained by MAYHEM before they are rocketed to a distant planetoid infested with enormous insects while SilverScanner returns to Project Paramount and helps organize a rescue. With the advent of WideScreener, he tracks down and rescues the Scanrangers just in time.
Monster: None
URL: http://www.geocities.com/tetsuokurata/episode14.html
Mistakes, Mysteries, and Weird Stuff
-SilverScanner knowing where Cape Paramount Base is located after being out of the picture for three years is problematic. It can be inferred that as a founding member he’d know its location, but that would mean it had never relocated, and by that token Blackorg, also a founding member, should know where it is too. That makes it strange that he didn’t discover the base’s whereabouts and make an effort to attack it until the thirtieth episode, especially with Scanranger unable to protect it now.
-As well, it was extremely bizarre the Alex didn’t seem to know who SilverScanner was. She should’ve had a good idea who owned the prototype uniform, and Mikey had learned who SilverScanner was seemingly in plenty of time to tell his friends before they battled Demolisher. Why would he keep the information he had learned about a powerful new ally to himself?
-We never found out how Takeshi lost his memory or disappeared for three years.
-Benedict said that the Brigade members would gain the film powers of the ranger they had fought before, but KuroFire, who received PinkScanner’s powers, had fought YellowScanner in “Back to Action! The Shining Silver Hero!” KuroFrost had been her opponent. It was unclear who all received whose powers, as Benedict plus his five monsters were absorbing the energies of five Scanrangers.
-Vin was able to see Earth from Kabutle, despite being rocketed through a time warp to “the other side of the galaxy.” The planets in Earth’s own solar system can only be seen as points of light in the sky without tremendously powerful telescopes.
-It was unknown how or why Markby would have had Kunio’s art homework, which he used to create WideScreener.
-Kunio sent a telepathic call for help to Takeshi, who was supposedly able to figure out that they were in space from it. However, Kunio’s message had given no clues whatsoever to their whereabouts.
-Kunio asked SilverScanner how they could get back to Earth, but Silver “[had made] his appearance, jumping out of the spaceship.”

-The closing line asked how the Scanrangers could stop MAYHEM without their film energy, but SilverScanner had said twice that it could be recharged after they got back to base.

Episode 15-The WideScreen Presentation!
Summary: Thunder Dolby and Demolisher battle again, but with an assist from SilverScanner and his new mecha, the Brigade is defeated…for now.
Monster: Demolisher again, KuroParrot again
URL: http://www.geocities.com/tetsuokurata/episode15.html
Mistakes, Mysteries, and Weird Stuff
-Alex apparently had the status of the Scanrangers’ altered powers figured out, but didn’t tell them not to use their old attacks, which led them losing their powers in the next episode.
-Kunio apparently hadn’t known that his art homework would be used to create a new mecha, yet for some reason he had created a CD that enabled WideScreener to transform into a humanoid shape. It’s also strange that Markby would lock its transformation ability while constructing WideScreener.
-It was said that WideScreener took out one of KuroParrot’s wings so it couldn’t fly, but he had already taken out its other wing so it already couldn’t fly.
-“Specium” was spelled “Spaceium”.
Personal Rants: A gag in the story involves Key stealing what he thinks are WideScreener’s codes from Takeshi, but the scenario is riddled with holes. Once he got the codes from Kunio’s dorm, is there some reason Takeshi would leave by the door rather than just teleport back to base, what with the others having barely survived their first fight with Demolisher? How would Key know to ambush him outside the dorm and know to demand the codes? What good did Key think codes for WideScreener would do him without a WideScreener of his own? Why did Takeshi think that Key was going to destroy the CD, as he hadn’t indicated any intent to do so (he’d indicated willingness to kill Takeshi to get it)? And why did Key believe Takeshi when he suddenly caved in and handed over the “real” CD? Key was the one who found out that Takeshi had saved the other Scanrangers from Kabutle, meaning he knows this guy flew to the other side of the universe to save Key’s mortal enemies. If Takeshi was going to sell out the rangers that easily, that’s a hell of a thing he didn’t have to do.

Story-

Three years before the story begins, Project Paramount discovers a meteor housing energy that gives people the power to materialize scenes from their favorite movies. Unfortunately, it also contains an evil presence, Blackorg, who takes over the body of member Damien Borg and flees to the stars to form MAYHEM after killing Roger Alexandria. Project member Takeshi Hayata loses his memory of serving with the project and fades out of the picture for some reason.
In the present, three students at Central Jersey University are told by Roger’s wife Daphne (“Professor Alex” to her friends) that their love of movies makes them the perfect choice to possess the power she discovered and use it to fight Blackorg and his MAYHEM cohorts when they return to take over Earth. Although disbelieving at first, the students are convinced by their first clash with MAYHEM’s robotic flunkies and become Movie Task Force Scanranger.
After repeated failures on the part of his henchmen, Blackorg hires Benedict’s Brigade to remove the Scanrangers’ interference in his plans once and for all. Although Scanranger is outmatched by the Brigade and their own mecha, Demolisher, Mikey luckily befriends a man who turns out to be SilverScanner, the original Scanranger, whose power tips the balance in their favor and allows them to defeat, but not destroy, Benedict’s Brigade.
Indeed, after just a few filler stories and an adventure back in time alongside Jetman, Benedict’s Brigade reappears with an even stronger Demolisher. They easily destroy Scanrangers’ mecha (not for long) and put Nick in a coma. With a gift of enhanced power from a friendly alien, and a new mecha, BlockBluster, the Scanrangers again turn the tables on their enemies again and destroy the Brigade once and for all.
The MAYHEM officers gain film energy of their own to compete with Scanrangers’ heightened abilities and begin ramping up the abilities of their monsters, pitting the Scanrangers against monsters like KuroSlasher and KuroHoungan. Around this time the rangers are assisted by Peter Emmanuel, who has film energy over Christian movie scenes and ultimately dies in single combat with Blackorg. The mind of Blackorg’s human host is shaken loose by his clash with Peter and begins to struggle for dominance.
Shortly afterward, MAYHEM decides to attack the wounded Scanrangers where they live and launches a full-scale invasion of their base. During the chaos, Kunio is paralyzed, but his crush, Carmen Diaz, has a moral awakening and becomes the new YellowScanner upon discovering her own anime powers. Unfortunately, soon afterward Mikey is manipulated by Vixen into attacking her alter ego as a college professor and expelled from the university.
Scanranger continues to fight the melodramatic fight against MAYHEM.

Our heroes are Eiga Sentai Scanranger, or Movie Task Force Scanranger. They’re imbued with a special “film energy” from outer space that allows them to create special attacks by visualizing the occurrences of a scene from a movie within their genre (like Zorro slashing a Z or Moe poking Curly in the eyes) and channeling it so that the Scanranger is the one slashing a Z with his sword or poking a bad guy in the eyes, which makes it more effective than normal. This is compared to Green Lantern in the stories.

RedScanner: Vin Henderson a.k.a. Vin Harlock IS The Manly-Man Team Leader, and if you want my opinion an idealized projection of the author. Film major with minor in Physical Education. Fighting style is aikido, and his film energy comes from action movies. Nickname is “Athlete of Action (and Adventure, in the early episodes).” Implied to have had a rough childhood, and his father was some kind of military officer stationed in Japan at some point. His (civilian) nickname is an homage to Captain Harlock
Signature weapon: Swashbuckler Sword, can transform between rapier and katana, and Cinerama Cutlass after the Swashbuckler was destroyed.
Special attacks: Abarenbo Attack, Flying Flynn Finish, Zorro Slash, charged sword attacks all, and Cutlass Crash, which is all of his previous attacks rolled into one.

GreenScanner: Nick Simonds IS The Brains of the Outfit, as well as the second in command. Computer Science major with Film minor. His fighting style is wrestling (which I think makes him the team’s strongman), and his film energy comes from special effects (supposedly “classic horror” too but this never happens). Nickname is “SPFX Soldier.”
Signature weapon: DVD Launcher
Special attacks: Holoclone Army, creating holographic clones of himself, and pretty much anything else he can think of.

BlueScanner: Benjamin “B.C.” Shimamura IS The Odious Comic Relief. Theater Arts major with English minor. His fighting style is judo, and his film energy comes from clean comedies. He is weakened by profanity and toilet humor until the equivalent of a V-chip is added to his costume. He, and all the Japanese Scanrangers, are big tokusatsu fans. Nickname is “King of Comedy.” Family name is an homage to Cyborg 009. I dislike this character intensely.
Signature weapon: Speed-Bo Staff
Special attacks: Costello Cry and Anvil Chorus, which involves bopping enemies with anvils.

YellowScanner: Kunio “Mikey” Mikimoto IS The Guy With No Distinctive Traits. Fine Arts/Computer Arts double major. His fighting style is Shotokan karate, and his film energy comes from anime. It says science fiction too, but either YellowScanner has yet to use their powers for anything not also anime-related. His nickname changes several times throughout the series, from “Heavy Metal Sci-Fi Scourge” to “Heavy Mecha Maniac,” but “Animemaniac” seems to have stuck. Had a telepathic bond with Takeshi that was forgotten after a few episodes. Expelled from CJU in episode 37 for attacking the disguised Vixen.
Signature weapon: Missile-firing Valkyrie Vancher/Vancer
Special attacks: Warp Speed Smash, where he crashes into a monster in a Macross mecha, and Eigaoken, your basic chi fireball.

YellowScanner II: Carmen Diaz IS The Mid-Season Replacement. Computer Arts/Fashion Design double major. After Mikey is paralyzed by Vixen and Ug, Carmen, formerly cold and crass, grows some virtue and becomes the new YellowScanner with her own latent anime powers brought to the surface. Her fighting style is capoeira, and her attacks, nickname and weapons are the same as the original YellowScanner with the addition of being able to reap special attacks from video games. First appears in episode 19, becomes YellowScanner in 31.
Special attacks: All of Kunio’s, her own include Cinema Caliente, based on Sailor Moon’s Rainbow Spiral Heart Attack, Unicorn Star Smash based on Saint Seiya’s Pegasus Ryuseiken (which is a little weird since there was a Unicorn Saint too), and in normal form she can go Super Saiyajin.

PinkScanner: Toni Montanez IS The Obligatory Female. Dance Arts major with Music minor. Her fighting style is kung fu, and her film energy comes from musicals. Nickname is “Musical Mistress.”
Signature weapon: The nearly never-used Film Splicer Shield
Special attacks: Cherisse Kick and Titanic Attack, where a tidal wave and iceberg hit the monster.

SilverScanner: Takeshi Hayata IS The Deus Ex Machina. Original Scanranger, wears the prototype suit. Lost his memories of working with Project Paramount for some reason until witnessing a battle between the other rangers and MAYHEM. Adjunct professor of Asian Studies. His fighting style is not identified, but his film energy comes from tokusatsu (Japanese live action programming mostly about transforming superheroes). Nickname is “Gin Hikari no Senshi,” or “Warrior of Light,” or “Shining Silver Hero.” First appears in episode 10, (re)becomes SilverScanner in 12. Family name is definitely an homage to Ultraman, given name is probably an homage to Kamen Rider Ichigo.
Signature weapon: SilverMagnum, which can become a sword (MagnumSabre), or laser gun (SabreMagnum). Being the sixth ranger, this is his only weapon.
Special attacks: Silver Punch and Silver Kick adapted from Kamen Rider, able to grow like Ultraman (see mecha section).

The Scanrangers are equipped and assisted by the Project Paramount Second Unit, “an operation to keep aliens and other hostile extraterrestials from conquering this planet..”
Professor Daphne Alexandria: The operation’s “lieutenant commander” although she’s actually the leader. Her friends call her Alex. Widow of Roger. Looks a lot like Jennifer Beals. With her huge list of abilities, I'm frankly amazed she isn't a Scanranger.
Professor Ben Markby: Generic scientist.
Sarita Jain Puri: A radar technician/other generic scientist.
Axel Rosewood: A campus cop who’s a secret agent for Project Paramount.

There are some other characters who didn’t really fit any category.
Danger Woman: A guest heroine who hurts bad guys by singing. Whenever she shows up she’s invariably aided by the swordsman Phantom Highlander.
Peter Emmanuel: The original recipient of film energy, his devotion to the Christian faith giving him the power to copy Christian religious elements from movies like the Ark of the Covenant scene from Raiders of the Lost Ark. First appeared in episode 26, died in battle with Blackorg in 29. Had a younger brother, Mark, who I’m betting will become the “Unstoppable Film Warrior.”
Aileen: An alien “enchantress” who guards an all-powerful amulet.
Kimiko: B.C.’s girlfriend and a dead ringer for Sayuri Uchida (the actress who played Blue Swallow on Jetman, below). The explanation for the resemblance looks unlikely to come about now, but originally was going to be that she’s a member of the same race as Aileen.
Chojin Sentai Jetman: Birdman Task Force Jetman, Red Hawk, Black Condor, Yellow Owl, Blue Swallow, White Swan. One of the most popular of televised sentai, and an homage to Gatchaman (brought to English-speaking countries as Battle of the Planets). Besides appearing in a pair of crossovers, a couple episodes from their series clearly “inspired” episodes of Scanranger.

Like any sentai, Scanranger uses a variety of exotic weapons and vehicles.
Video Cassette Player Bracelets/FilmBraces: Communicators/teleporters/time freezers/transformers for the five rangers. In 37, they become DVD bracelets.
Eiga Changer: Silver’s belt buckle transformer.
Filmblade: A standard sword which has film reel etchings on its blade.
Scanlaser: Standard sentai laser gun. Shaped like a movie camera.
Cinemasher: Weapon used to deal the deathblow to normal sized monsters. Formed from the unique weapons wielded by each Scanranger. Kills monsters by flying through them. Becomes Cinemasher by Deluxe after Red gets a new sword to contribute.
Camzooka: Another weapon used to finish off normal sized monsters, a laser cannon shaped like a movie camera. Given to Scanranger in the eighth episode.
Bijou Bikes: Motorcycles named after famous movie theaters; RedTivoli, GreenRialto, BlueNickelodeon, YellowRitz, PinkAngelika. Debut in the second episode, named in the thirty-sixth.
GinScirocco: A car for SilverScanner that has a Battlizer-like mode where it becomes additional armor and weaponry. Debuts in episode thirty four, used for the first time in thirty six. “Gin” being Japanese for “silver.”
Only known team attack is the Pan-Scan Shocker, where the Scanrangers flail a monster with energy whips.

The Scanrangers make use of a mecha fleet of downright Ohrangerian proportions. I’m a bit surprised a Gunmazin-like character shaped like an Oscar hasn’t appeared. Listed in order of appearance.
Hollywood Vehicles/Thunder Dolby THX: Mecha based on the mascots of movie studios. TriStar Pegasus (Red), MGM Lion (Green), Tatsunoko Seahorse (Blue), Hollywood Studios Sphinx (Yellow), and NBC Peacock (Pink). They are, of course, able to unite into a humanoid configuration, Thunder Dolby THX. Thunder Dolby is armed with the Great Editor Sword, which it uses to perform the Heavy Edit Slash (after returning from destruction it becomes the Heavy Editor Sword, Double Feature Final Cut), Film Reel Whip, Gatling Reel Gunner, Dolby Shield, Sphinx Knuckle, Dolby Beam, Dolby Sonic Smash. Used and combined for the first time in episode 6.
J(umbo) Mode: SilverScanner has the power to grow to giant size for a few minutes, just like Ultraman.
WideScreener: SilverScanner’s spaceship, created from Mikey’s art homework. Capable of creating “mega-hyper warp drives,” and transforming into a humanoid mode in which it is armed with Screener Hawk, Screener Stars, Screener Magnum, and Screener Cross Nova (based on Ultraman’s Specium Beam attack). Debuts in episode 14.
Box Office Smashers/BlockBuster: Human-shaped robots modeled after the film genres of the Scanrangers who pilot them; ShogunScanner (Red), CosmoScanner (Green), ClownScanner (Blue), JetScanner (Yellow) and DivaScanner (Pink). Can combine into BlockBuster, “the ultimate fighting machine,” equipped with PSI-TEK Wave, BlockBuster Barrage, BlockBuster V Beam, and BlockBuster Bomb (based on Getta Robo G’s final attack, minus the crippling loss of power). Debut in episode 22.
SuperScreener: In episode 23 WideScreener is rebuilt so that it can become armor for Silver’s J Mode, also canceling out his big-size time limit. This new configuration is equipped with the upgraded attack Mega Cross Nova.
DolbyScreener: A combination of Thunder Dolby and WideScreener, able to perform the Dolby Screener Cyclone. Debuts in episode 27.
StuntMaster: A non-piloted robot meant for speed. Able to transform into a cannon used by Thunder Dolby or BlockBuster called (of course) the StuntMaster Blaster. Debuts in episode 31.
Danger Dy Na Mo and Phantom Slingshot: Mecha given to Danger Woman and Phantom Highlander in the Christmas episode. Can combine into the Ultimate Danger Dy Na Mo.
Cape Paramount Base: Scanrangers’ secret base. Destroyed in episode 30.
Mt. Columbia Catacombs: New base.
The Scanranger mecha can open a “cinevortex” to transport itself and enemy monsters to another dimension to avoid endangering civilians.

Their enemies are the invading armies of MAYHEM, Mechanical Androids Yoked Hither to Eliminate/Enslave Mankind, who alternately want to populate Earth with their “mechanized humans” (although none of the leaders seem mechanized) or steal the planet’s natural resources.
Blackorg: The omnipotent blustering leader of MAYHEM. Former Project Paramount member Damien Borg possessed by an evil being. Armed with the Metalstaff. Can change into a monstrous form in which he is even stronger.
Commander/Lady Vixen: The vain female officer. Gains film energy over suspense movies. Special attack is the Beauti-Bolt. Around the middle of the series she adopts the guise of Professor Vivian Fox to spy on the Scanrangers at school. After Carmen scratches her beautiful face, develops a grudge with the new YellowScanner.
General Ug: A caveman brought to the present. Typical brainless oaf. Gains power over war movies. I see him becoming a mindless monster toward the end of the story.
Anark Key: An officer recruited from Earth, Britain specifically. Supposedly a psychological warfare expert. Gains film power over “controversial” movies. Favorite disciplinary target of MAYHEM’s leaders.
Byte: A robot spider built by Mikey and stolen by MAYHEM to enlarge their monsters by biting them and injecting energy. He has a change of heart and dies helping the rangers battle KuroSkeeter. He is replaced after his demise by implanted enlarging bugs called KillerBytes.
Pretty Borg Floyd and Andy Roy: “Cyberbodyguards,” Vixen’s two personal henchmen. In episode 34 Floyd’s name suddenly changes to Cyrus Borg (Cy Borg, get it!).
Kinks: Robotic goon squad in “metallic silver.”
CyberCreatures: Cyborg animal or stereotype-based (pirate, model, witch doctor) monsters. Their names all start with “kuro,” Japanese for “black.”
Benedict’s Brigade: A group of mercenaries hired by Blackorg to extirpate the Scanrangers when his own flunkies repeatedly fail. Led by swordsman Arno Benedict and consisting of several CyberCreatures; KuroGrappler, Fire, Frost, Buzzer and Lectronn.
Team Nightmare: A team of robotic warriors created by Key and made up of parodies of famous horror movie killers; Friedrick Krieger, Jetzun, Laceface, Sugar Guy, and Shriek. Can combine into the giant CyberCreature KuroSlasher.
Colonel TriloByte: A new officer brought in to take command while Blackorg recovered from a beating at the hands of Peter Emmanuel. An old member looking for revenge against his former comrades, and who could that be?
The Unstoppable Film Warrior: No details yet, but I’m betting it’s Peter’s embittered brother Mark.

MAYHEM uses advanced technology itself, including…
Nebultopia: Their satellite fortress “floating high above space.” Sometimes the “l” is optional. Shaped like a giant spider (wonder if Crisis Empire’s base was any inspiration).
Demolisher: A giant robot piloted by Benedict’s Brigade. Later replaced by the more powerful ChaosDemolisher.

General Mistakes, Mysteries, and Dumb Stuff
-For some reason, Alex is the “lieutenant commander” of Project Paramount even though she appears to be the leader of the operation. “Lieutenant” would imply that she’s subordinate to the real head of Project Paramount.
-The story has some grammatical issues.
-It constantly mixes up words, like “enabling” when it means “causing,” “divulge” instead of “deduce” (I think), “was” instead of “were” and vice versa, “insure” instead of “ensure,” and “sheathes” instead of “unsheathes,” etc.
-The story constantly says that something “seems” to be what it’s obviously supposed to be.
-A “stray shot” is when a shot hits something it wasn’t supposed to. Yet in Scanranger the term is applied to heroes shooting villains and their monsters, most probably what they intended to hit, and occasionally something being hit by an attack is described as “hitting on impact,” which is redundant.
-A perplexing thing about Scanranger is how the characters are often defensive about the integrity of their secret identities, yet MAYHEM knows those secret identities. It’s not uncommon for sentai villains to know their enemies’ true identities, but usually the characters and often the show itself don’t constantly make a big deal about keeping them secret. A sentai that does the secret identity issue well is Megaranger; the villains don’t know the heroes’ true identities until the very end, but once they do, they go all-out against the rangers in their everyday lives. If the secrecy of the identities is a big deal and villains find it out, it’s okay as long as they do something with it like play mind games with the heroes. It’s weird and even a little annoying when the Scanrangers get up in arms about maintaining their secret identities, when the people who want to kill them have and never make use of that knowledge.
-Where is SilverScanner all the time? Like most sixth rangers, his job is to be the team’s ace in the hole who shows up at the last minute to pull their fat out of the fire. What Scanranger doesn’t seem to notice is that such rangers usually have a reason that they’re not there with the rest of the team all the time. Sometimes it’s because the other ranger isn’t actually part of the team and he merely fights for a common cause as the other heroes (like Signalman and TimeFire), there’s some curse he’s under (like Dragonranger and the Titanium Ranger), or maybe their personalities just don’t mesh well with the idea of being a full-time team player until later in the show (like Kibaranger and GaoSilver). When they are part of the same unit (like MagiShine and most Power Ranger sixth members), there’s some in-context reason when they do things apart from the rest of the team all the time, though it might vary from episode to episode. SilverScanner literally is not around all the time only because he’s the last minute save guy. He doesn’t even go to save people from Kinks or blow up a meteor while the others fight a monster, even though he takes his orders from the same commander and parks his robot in the same hangar as everybody else on the team.
-Why is SilverScanner’s prototype ranger equipment more powerful than the other rangers’? Again, when an extra member wears the prototype costume and it’s more powerful than the finished product worn by the others, there’s usually a reason for it. For instance, MegaSilver’s suit would automatically shut itself down after two and a half minutes (although he did fix that awfully fast when he put his mind to it…). Also, Abarekiller wears the prototype Abaranger suit which is stronger than the others, but if he overuses it it’ll explode with enough force to level a city. SilverScanner seems more powerful than the others and has extra powers like becoming a giant, and nobody even seemed to know about any limitations in them. Or is J Mode a product of his film energy? What’s the deal?
-Why do the Scanrangers have both teleporters and motorcycles? Heck, one time BlueScanner was doing “about 200 mph” on foot. The reason sentai have motorcycles or go-carts or jet broomsticks or whatever is because that’s what they use to get around. Sentai characters can’t push a button and be beamed up to wherever they want to go, and it works better for suspense that way. Take, for example, the time Ug and KuroPirate attacked Six Flags; the rangers could’ve pushed a button and been there in an instant, but instead the Scanrangers rode their motorcycles there to stop them, giving MAYHEM more time to attack people and destroy property.

No, as a matter of fact, there has never been one single time where I've been mellow.

Much appreciated, GH, although I'm not as bombastic as I used to be.

HK, I find your reviews are great, but I'm not entirely sure what you're reviewing. Someone's fan fiction, right? Of course, after your scathing comments, I'm not likely to run out to read it anyway.

Well twitter, I thought the foreword and the title of the thread kind of spelled it out, but I could easily have been mistaken. I apologize. Yes, these are my thoughts on an internet fanfiction I discovered some time ago and recently felt a desire to get back to. While I'm glad people have decided to check these out I was mostly hoping the guy who writes the stories would respond to my message to take a look at these threads and see what another fan thinks of his work.

Of course, the series does not fit in anywhere in Power Rangers continuity anyway. I'm presuming the fic was actually written before the airing of "Countdown to Destruction", which clearly showed Andros destroying Zordon and unleashing a wave of energy that turned Rita, Zedd and Divatox into good guys while turning the rest (aside from the remnants of the Machine Empire encountered in "Forever Red") into dust.

Why yes, I have been known to enjoy the show (although I've never been able to figure out how the post-Turbo rangers have been able to instantaneously travel between locations). Of course, sentai is better and this fic's still crap
