Thanks for being a nice guy. You do rock!

I never saw the original Fog, I'm afraid. Is there a change in the basic setting that might make them change the cast, or is everything the same.

Well the original was a far better movie. Both took place in a seaside village called Antonio bay. But thats about where the similarities end. The original revolved around mostly Adults (the youngest principal character was Jamie lee Curtis, probably in her 20's) While the remake is mostly teens/early 20's. The original relied mostly on atmosphere and subtle creepiness, while the remake relied on "jumping cat" moments and gore/body counts. The original had you caring about the inhabitants, the remake, the cast was mostly annoying hook fodder.

FYI, the film THE ENTITY used a full-body prosthetic for Barbara Hershey's nude scenes - esp the one where her fiance comes in to find her being assaulted on her bed.

THE FOG remake absolutely sucked.

Reality is not optional.

Not only that... but what the hell has happened to John Carpenter in general?! Didn't he used to be smart, transgressive and talented?

He used, but he took a gigantic beating after releasing his best film, "The Thing" in 1982, and since then he doesn't seem to be the same. His efforts from then on are either toned-down for comercial purposes (Starman, Christine, Big trouble in Little China) or to radical to ever enjoy a big distribution (Prince of Darkness, They Live).

I do think some of his later works have they moments (In the mouth of madness, Village of the Damned), and even some of them are f--- in' A (Vampires), but most people (and critics) tend to think he is in poor shape.

Now he's got two new movies in production and he's scheduled to film an episode of the anthology "Masters of Horror", so chances are he's not retiring anytime soon.

John Carpenter...I have really mixed feelings about his work. I absolutely love Big Trouble in Little China and The Thing, and Escape from New York, but I think he is somewhat overated.

I thought Vampires sucked (no pun intended). Just another story of a bunch of unlikable jerks fighting a sterotypical goth looking vampire. Why is it that all vampires seem to look like they shop at Hot Topic these days. Dusk Till Dawn is about the only recent vampire movie I can think of that took a different approach.

I've seen a few episodes of Masters of Horror, and find it to be pretty terrible. Nothing new or interesting about it, just seems to be pandering to hardcore fans of the genre.

Reviewing my thoughts on Carpenter, now I realise I sounded quite harsh. I'm a die-hard Carpenter fan, but I have to admit that he is no longer the same of his first works, that he seems to have lost part of his talent for expert pace and atmosphere, but he still stands head above shoulders when you compare him to other horror directors.

I really expected his career to boost after "Escape from LA" and "Vampires", but then he went to make one of his worst ever, "Ghosts of Mars". I really wish him the best of lucks with his new projects.

Apology accepted. My point is that anytime they remake a movie these days, they have to make absolutely sure its politically correct. That pisses me off to no end. For instance, the movie "The Fog". In the original, there were no black people in the movie. Now on the re-make there is. I am not bieng racist, but its like saying the original version didnt "benefit" from affermative action. Do you see what i am saying?

And somethign else. I have a theory that a novelist or scriptwriter can combine a racist attitude towards Blacks or a sexist attitude towards women with a generally high level of respect for the human race. Just compare the Black butler in JEZEBEL with the Black F.B.I. agent in the remake of THAT DARN CAT. Who behaves with dignity and competance and who winds up falling into a trash dumpster?

Well, we can go 1 step furthur and point out the general "feminization" of men, eg, look at most of the commercials today, how many potray the man as a clueless idiot and his wife/girlfriend as smarter, more in control of a situation. Or Dad as a bumbling fool, totally out of touch with the rest of the family, only to have Mom save the day from Dads cluelessness. Or showing a mans way of doing things bieng considered sexist or archaic, while the wife sarcastically rolling her eyes from embarrasment before explaining things like cell phones, car performance, or electronic devices to thier dim-witted if not neanderthal like spouses. Am I making sense?

Yeah, but believe me -- there's nothing new about this. The title of the radio show Father Knows Best (1949-1952) was sarcastic, and the male leads of Fibber McGee and Molly and The Great Guildersleeve were pretty much shown up by women and children every time they turned around.

But note that you'll find this type of stereotyping more so in comedythan anywhere else. The mere fact that you find it in comedy instantly signals to the audience that this "isn't really true" so it's funny. Although, one of the few times I found it really believable was in "The Honeymooners". By the way, I just got back from NaNoWriMo (a winner). That was one long month! (as detailed in my blog)

Hey, not Alec Baldwin! Used to hate the guy, but he's sort of redeeming himslef lately doing cool supporting roles. Sean Penn could be a good one, but I don't hate him enough. So far, I think his talent sort of compensates for his inflated ego and lack of social skills.

Now, people like Matthew McConaghey, Colin Farrel or Jason Priestley I would pay to see them raped by angry ghosts.
