And I can buy that easily. The ad is way too disturbing for children, and as this board proves, hilarious for adults. Not what I would call a success.
I still disagree in that those ads are not necessary, though, since kids don't care about news, and they could be lead to think war is cool from videogames or war movies, including those who declare themselves "anti-war", such as Saving Private ryan. Hell, I'm a sort of a pacifist, but whenever I watch / play one of those I feel like taking Omaha Beach on my own.

Then what, pray tell, was the freaking POINT? Did they expect a large portion of ADULTS to go "Argh, how horrible, the Smurfs are being exterminated! Why, war must be BAD! We never got that impression from say, Saving Private Ryan, or the nightly news, but when we see SMURFS in jeopardy....!"
I think they're going for the demographic that finally got outraged over Iraq because a soldier character in Doonesbury lost his leg over there. "People, sheople -- my pop-cultural icons are getting HURT, here! If we don't stop things now, the landscape will be littered with the corpses of My Little Ponies and the citizens of McDonaldLand! DO YOU WANT MAYOR MCCHEESE'S CHEESY LIFEBLOOD ON YOUR HANDS???"

geez, I hope none of the money my church's youth group raised trick-or-treating for UNICEF went to this ad. Kids are traumatized by it and adults for the most part think it's hilarious. What's a person going to say " Smurfs are dying because of war we must stop it!" I hate the smurfs so i thought this was funny as hell.
