Why remake a movie that wasn't any good to begin with? (ie Fun With Dick and Jane)

Why remake a movie that was perfectly good to begin with? (ie King Kong)

I can see a remake from silent to sound to color but even so almost always the black and white origional is better. In the early days before television and homevideo often the only way for people to see a movie was by remake, but these days with the far better origionals within easy viewing I just don't get it.

Think of it like cover versions.

Sometimes a cover version of a good song can become a great song

(Think Sinead O'Connor's "Nothing Compares 2U" or Jimi Hendrix's "All Along the Watchtower).

Sometimes a remake of a good film can become a great film. (As seems to be the case with King Kong)

Sometimes a remake of a bad film can become a great film (c.f Ocean's Eleven) simply because the director can take the plotline and improve on the mistakes that have gone before.

Sometimes cover versions simply show a lack of inspiration (Step forward Michael Bolton/Rod Stewart). As with films.

As I stated in another topic, the latest Kong remake looks great. But it does seem that Hollywood is running out of ideas. It's can be hard to come up with something original because almost everything you can think of has already been done at some point.

I think there are plenty of good ideas still out there in Hollywood, but they just aren't getting financed because of the studio's obsession with getting "sure things". They like doing remakes or film versions of TV shows and the like because those are familiar commodities that they think will guarantee them at least some return, whereas the "bold, daring, nver-been-done before" story runs the risk of being a total flop at the box office. Plus, the films that are based on things everybody is familiar with are easier to advertise and market.

I think tam1MI is spot-on, here. It's name recognition, which eliminates the need for a lot of marketing. You see this even in many so-called original ideas, which are often described as "It's [film x] meets [film y]!" and sold as "If you liked [film x] and [film y], you're gonna LOVE [film z]!"

I think the most pointless remake was the Psycho remake. Scene for scene, line for line, camera angle for camera angle remake with a few "modern" twists: 1. It's in color 2. Norman masterbates while watching Marion undress 3. One of the characters now carries a walkman.

I should have heeded this warning this past weekend when we rented a movie called "11:14" whose blurb compared it to "Memento" and "Crash". Except, of course, that Memento and Crash were good.

Actually, the same thing happened with Vanilla Sky.

Let's see. The original Psycho was directed by a man who had made mostly thrillers for the past thirty years and was known -- quite accurately -- as the Master of Suspense. Psycho: The Remake was made by a guy who made small, edgy dramas and had never made a thriller.

Open Your Eyes was made by a director who knew suspense: his next movie was The Others. It was remade as Vanilla Sky by a man who made amiable comedy-dramas.

These remakes had Recipe For Disaster written all over 'em.

So, they updated "Psycho" from "murder/horror" to "Porkys Run A Motel"?

I like the song-cover analogy. Like how Smash Mouth's version of "I'm A Believer" was a thousand times better than the Monkees' original.

They're remaking The Producers. The Broadway play was based upon the movie from the 1960s(I think that's the right decade anyway.)

If you're a fan of Roger Ebert look up his review of the Psycho remake(especially if you think I made up those changes)

I saw the remake on the sci-fi channel once. With all the edits it wound up being exactly the same as the original except the acting was lousy and it was in color-and don't forget that walkman!

For the record, any respect I might have had for Anne Heche as an actor or a person went out the window after I heard her part of the Psycho DVD commentary. I wasn't a bit surprised when she went off on that space-alien kick of hers.

Just saw Steve Martin on the Tonight show promoting THE PINK PANTHER, CHEAPER BY THE DOZEN 2 and SHOPGIRL. There was a clip from PINK PANTHER and a "PSA" with Marin as Inspector Clouseau -- Good Gravy! Martin was HORRIBLE as Clouseau! I never imagined that Martin would be any good in the roll, but actually seeing him attempt to fill Peter Seller's shoes was more awful than I thought it would be. When will they learn? Sellers just owned the roll.

As with may other remakes, the PINK PANTHER remake looks like it's not aimed at fans of the original.

With some of these sad "commercial" flicks Martin is doing, I'm guessing he must have some kind of deal where he'll do one or two of these, and then the studio will finance one of his pet projects or something.
