Since Smurfette is one of the casualties, I declare victory and a day of celebration that the Smurf menace has been eradicated once and for all. I never did like those annoying blue creatures.

Hmm, sounds like it might have backfired....
But seriously, folks, it appears to be just another example of Big Advertising's assumption that if it's SHOCKING!!?!! enough, it's good advertising. Which may be one reason why TV watching is steadily dropping. I can turn off shows that I don't like - but no network gives "parental advisories" when objectional ads pop up in the middle of the most innocuous "how to wallpaper your spinet piano" shows. |

While I think the Smurf commercials are idiotic, I have to disagree with the idea that TV ratings are falling because advertising is shocking or offensive. Network TV viewership is down because of cable, DVDs, videogames and other sources of entertainment are becoming more popular.
Anyway we're talking about an add that runs in Europe, where they show nudity in Orange juice commercials right? |

Right (and I thank God every night for that). But still I found the ad very disturbing, since I grew up watching those cartoons and reading the comic books. It felt like unnecesary roughness, if you know what I mean.
The best of it is that not many children these days will even recognise the smurfs. |

I still can't believe that the makers of this cartoon failed to realize the only people who will be shocked, horrified, and moved are those who will already be devotees of UNICEF's agenda, while everyone else will simply laugh their asses off, even those who would otherwise sympathize with the ad's message.
Basically, UNICEF pulled a PETA with this one. |

^Correct. I'm laughing to hard to care about the message. It's funny to see UNICEF taking a page from PETA's playbook.
Remember the scene in MST3K's feature of "Prince Of Space," where Mike gets turned into a small robot and says, "C'mon you guys! We're gonna get annihilated and stuff," Crow laughingly says, "I don't care, it's worth it to see you like this!" Remember that? That's precisely how I feel about this ad. |

Not a bold prediction at all: the inevitable Flash cartoon that will arise from this (if one hasn't already that is) will contain the phrase: "It's a Smurfy day TO DIE!" That and Gargamel will be piloting the plane.
Really, what are they going for here?
Carpet bombings is bad? Really, you don't say. War sucks? I think most kids are already aware of that.
BM: I should have mentioned this at the beginning. I solve my problems with violence. |

That's the most disturbing part. It's amazing how much care went into little details like that. Somebody up there in Belgium REALLY hates those creatures.

That's pretty twisted. I grew up with the Smurfs myself(drove my parents INSANE with that show) I think most people get that war sucks.

I think that one bit alone pretty much symbolizes the whole project. In an attempt to convey horror, they give us hilarity instead.
Really, when was the last time you saw somebody running around with a hat on fire, and it wasn't supposed to be funny? |

| My understanding was that the Smurfs ad only ran at night so most kids wouldn't see it anyway. |

Then what, pray tell, was the freaking POINT? Did they expect a large portion of ADULTS to go "Argh, how horrible, the Smurfs are being exterminated! Why, war must be BAD! We never got that impression from say, Saving Private Ryan, or the nightly news, but when we see SMURFS in jeopardy....!"
Imagining the workings of that ad agency's mind is even funnier than the Smurf with his hat on fire. |

A news story that I saw reported a large number of children in that country did see the ad, a bunch of parents called to complain that they had been severely traumatized by it. |
