I don't care how much they update it, a remake is a remake.
There ARE good stories that have not been filmed, if a studio can't find one to do, SHUT 'EM DOWN!

Tea Leoni in a bikini....

Hmm......

<*Mike does a quick calculation*>

Not quite worth it, but close.

Seriously, though: apparently Jim Carey's agent
must have negociated for a large part of his
salary to be paid in small bills so his client
could use it to wipe himself after taking care
of certain unsavory biological practices.

That is the ONLY way this piece of drek could
have cost anywhere NEAR that much....

Is this post a joke? Didn't know Jim Carrey's salary was $99.99 million these days...

Honestly, I think it looks pretty funny.

>>(Of course Carrey, who is one of Hollywood's A-list actors, commanding up to $30 million per picture, might be singled out as one reason Hollywood movies cost so much, but we digress.)<<

Of course, the reason that actors ask for such a big paycheck up front is that 1) studios are willing to pay them and 2) anyone working for a percentage of net profits in Hollywood is going to die homeless. According to his autobiography, Adam West has never been paid for appearing in 1966's Batman movie; stars don't want to wind up eating ramen for years so they ask to be paid before the movie is shot.

If Carrey says, "I'll do the film for $30 million," and the studio says "Okay!" what's he supposed to do?

Say, "I was just kidding, I'll do it for bus fare and a hot meal"? If I asked for, and received anything like that amount of money, I'd sure take it.

The studios are digging their own graves. The actors are just handing them the shovel.

Agreed, the studios are accepting large salaries for stars. And an upfront salary can be better than a percentage, unless the film is a monster hit. They need to budget properly and realize that hugely expensive stars may not be a good idea.

It seems that Dick and Jane (considering the lack of Leoni, shouldn't it have been called Fun with Dick?) went 25 days over schedule and 30-60 pages of rewrites! And they reshot the ending twice!

Also, Carrey will only get a percentage of his negotiated salary, with agents' / legal / whatever other fees being taken out of the contract. From memory, I think roughly more than a third of most movie salaries get eaten up by such fees.

Regardless, he certainly isn't gettting chump change for what looks to be a very ordinary movie.

How does this movie cost $100 million? Remember, the three Lord of the Rings movies each cost around $100 million. While Jim Carrey is getting paid a mint to be in this movie, I don't think anyone else was paid anywhere near what he is. Also, I don't imagine this has a lot of special effects, so where did the cash go? My theory is someone, or a lot of someones, is embezzling.

You know Grand Funk, don't you? The wild, shirtless lyrics of Mark Farner? The bong-rattling bass of Mel Schacher? The ... adequate drumwork of Don Brewer?

According to IMDb, this film started shooting 7 September 2004 (no end date provided) and it was indicated by Triviachamp to have run over schedule. Cameron Diaz dropped out of it at some point, leaving Tea Leoni to take the wife role.

Honestly, you have to wonder where that money went - did Sony budget for an $80 million comedy or something? Had a look around and found that "Hitch" (also from Sony) had a $70 million budget according to IMDb, which just amazes me no end. No wonder Sony is having problems turning a profit on films if its pouring this much money into its projects!

Now, here's the scary part: a $70 million comedy isn't all that big a deal these days. I read that the average budget of a movie -- the average -- is $64 million.

I can understand it -- at least to a point -- if it is a big special effects movie, a la Spider-Man or Lord of the Rings. But if it's a regular movie, taking place in the real world....

My head hurts.

What astonishes me even more given the price tag is the fact that this is the last movie in the world I would think warrants a remake. For reasons no longer clear to me (although I think its related to Rollercoaster), I was a big fan of George Segal when I was a kid. I caught all his movies on HBO and video (both then in their infancy), so I vaguely remember this movie.

In truth the original is one of those movies they should have put in a time capsule back in 1980 so that future historians could devote their careers to puzzling over the 70's. The whole plot revolves around bizarre 70's problems like runaway inflation and gas lines and funny collars and Presidents either kicked in the head playing football or spending their vacation fighting off killer rabbits. If Hollywood thinks that enough money will result from rehashing 30 year old malaise to justify dropping 100 million on a remake, then they are more out of touch than even I thought.

Just to point out how bizzaro world the 70's were, the thing I remember most about the original is the scene in which Segal is drowning his "getting fired" sorrows in a bar. He tells the bartender "Another drink por favour" and an undercover immigration agent arrests him for being an illegal immigrant because he used a Spanish phrase!!! Nowadays you can stroll around downtown L.A. with a sandwich board professing "I snuck across the border illegally and I'm looking to work off the books" and you won't be pestered by the INS.

Please, Jabootu, let them NOT include the infamous "toilet scene" that Jane Fonda did...

Of course, that's probably why they decided to remake the wretched thing.
