For all those who haven't heard of this one, it is a direct-to-video prequel to the 1993 Brian DePalma - Al Pacino latino gangster classic "Carlito's way". It stars Jay Hernandez, Mario Van Peebles, and, in minor roles, Luis Guzman, Burt Young and Sean "Puff Diddy" Combs.
Alright, I absolutely love the original, so I wasn't planning to see this one anytime soon, but finally I found a copy on my local rental store and I'm not made of stone, so I brought a copy home.
And I'm happy to say it's a quite enjoyable movie. Oh, you can bet Hernandez is no Pacino, and certainly Michael Bregman's filmmaking lacks the raw inventive and epic score of Brian DePalma's, but the whole thing is reasonably well done and very, very entertainning. The events keep moving at the right pace, there are some plausible plot twists and the cast, specially Young and Sean Combs, deliver some great performances.
If all those direct-to-video flicks were like these people would think twice before going to the theatre. Of course, according to other threads in this board, they are doing it already. |
