Is Karyn Kusama a Uwe Boll protege? I mean, the direction was uncannily similar. |

| Haven't seen it because I lost interest when I found out it was PG-13. Is it anything like the cartoon at all? |

Haven't seen it yet, but as indicated elsewhere, the PG-13 rating turned me off. Based on current Hollywood trends, I can guarantee that there will be an Unrated version afterwoods.
It also didn't help that I wasn't too fond of the cartoon, which was pointlessly 'artistic', was populated with anemic sharp-edged people, and as memory serves, was the only show I saw (and did see) where kissing seemed to require a lot of 'slurping'.
Based on the commercials/website though, it appears they normalized the story, toned down the violence (which was most of each short) and ditched the costume Aeon always wore in favor of spandex.
OOO, OOO, MISTAH KOTTER!
I have some trivia for all of you (speaking as a RPG addict now):
After WHite Wolfs wildly and inexplicably popular World of Darkness lines (Werewolf, Vampire, Wraith, Mage, and the oddly chosen Changeling), they decided to end everything in the year 2000 line, and move onward. One of (can't recall if it was THE) first attempts was a scifi game called Aeon. They went all out, including core books that were both of atypical size (somewhat bigger than a manga book as opposed to the usual oversized RPG book) and in the case of the first book, done up as a bizarre binder.
Then, MTV struck. Lawyers, smelling money decided that naming a SciFi game about psychics and aliens in the future Aeon was an attempt by White Wolf to cash in on the long dormant and short lived Aeon Flux cartoon about anorexic Supermodels fighting horny and implausible aliens. They sued, and White Wolf was forced to withdraw all of their unusually designed (and expensive) core books and re-issue all of them under the name Trinity. Those gamers that have the original Aeon books treasure them.
And thats one to grow on!

I've never seen the cartoon, although I remember being vaguely disturbed by MTV commercials for it when I was younger.
The movie really wasn't worth seeing. The atmosphere and performances were pretty well done, but the story and script were really jejune. The biggest surprise, for me, came when the movie came to a sudden, wimpering halt. The climax is so anti-climactic that I didn't even realize it WAS a climax.
I'm just curious - what about the PG-13 rating was a turnoff? The body count was fairly high despite an overall lack of blood, guts, swearing and nudity... |

One of the 'draws' of the cartoon was the highly stylized (and, for MTV of the time, pretty graphic) depictions of violence and sexuality, done in the manner of 70's vintage HEAVY METAL/METAL HURLANT comics. It never drew me in, though I did like the overall design of the gadgets & settings, though I intensely disliked the grotesque human characters.
The complainers, I think, do have a point that without the ideosyncratic designs and over the top graphic violence and sex, what you end up with is a pretty standard SF actioner that has Charlize Theron wasted.

Another problem is that the "name recognition" is pretty US specific - in fact, MTV subscriber-specific.
We did not, to the best of my knowledge, receive Aeon Flux in Canada, so I doubt we're lining up up here. |

Ah, I see - thanks MikeC.
Something tells me this isn't going to achieve "smash hit" status - but way for MTV to strike while the iron is hot, eh? When was the last time that channel even played cartoons (let alone music videos)? |

"AF" was played a long time back on SBS in Australia; SBS being the free-to-air channel that plays foreign movies, soccer and occasional cult items. It had its fans (I liked it) but I think few people would actually remember it, let alone be so dedicated to go an see it on the name alone.

That's very interesting stuff about White Wolf, considering they sued the makers of "Underworld" for plagiarism - and lost, to judge by the fact that an Underworld sequel is in the offing.
I used to watch Aeon Flux as a segment on "Liquid Sky", and have a full-length video. I liked it, but it doesn't have much recognition here in the UK. And if the violence is omitted, you won't have much of a film!

I'd see Aeon Flux on Liquid TV also, and liked the short-short adventures. Did get the video collection which besides the short-shorts had longer more traditional adventures which where just not as good as the shorter ones. With Aeon, I get the impression that Longer = Less.
Another segment on Liquid TV that I liked was a weird thing called DOG BOY -- been trying to find more info on this thing, or a collection of the shorts (I've not seen all the episodes), but web searches have turned up nothing.
