Damn, that's selling for nearly $20 everywhere else. Thanks for the tip.
PEGGY: I don't see how having a girl on the team would ruin it. Did a woman judge ruin the Supreme Court? HANK: Yes, and that woman's name was Earl Warren.

Well, I found Lou Ferrigno's Hercules and Sinbad films there, $7.50 each. "Smallville" seasons 1 and 2 were there for less than $20, and just recently they had a whole slew of things for $3.50, including Blade Runner and Minority Report.

I stumbled across a whole rack of DVDs for $1 each. As I was examining them a woman started looking too. I smiled and said "From what I've seen so far, they should pay you $1 to take these off their hands." She then made clear my opinion was not appreciated.
Some discount shoppers need to lighten up.

The public domain Superman cartoons are a great deal for $1. Beyond that, you're right, there's not a whole lot of value in those cheap DVDs (though you might find something you like if you look hard enough--I personally enjoyed the Dick Tracey and Flash Gordon dvds my local Dollar Tree carried).

Maybe I'm lucky but I usually find at least one thing of interest in those bargain bins. It does take patience sometimes.
Just after Halloween this year I was in my local K-Mart picking up a Darth Vader costume on super discount (just planning ahead- my youngest will be old enough to trick or treat next year) and I spied the bin of holiday theme discs. I managed to snag both "Dementia 13" and the original "Little Shop of Horrors" for 2 bucks each.
The best one I ever got from the Dollar Tree is a disc with 4 episodes of the old "Adventures of Fu Manchu" TV series. It is, quite literally, insane. And it includes the ep where Dr Fu and Hitler try to take over the world.
Speaking of insanity- some of these discs include old commercials from the period of the movies, and one of them includes a Chesterfields commercial that has to be seen to believed (I'm pretty sure it is on my "Frankenstein's Daughter/ Devil Girl from Mars" disc). I've been meaning to transcribe it for a while- you couldn't write a better parody if you tried, and this is for real! Essentially they are trying to convince you that other brands of cigarettes are harmful, but not Chesterfields- they're actually healthy. And they've got an exhaustive six month study's worth of data to prove it. It's pure gold.
Another recent find was "The Brainiac" for all of 3 bucks- worth every penny!

I don't think there is a Wal-Mart anywhere close to me -- definitely would pick up some of the things mentioned if I saw them at those prices!

This forces me to conclude that you are in all likelyhood currently residing somewhere on Mars.

I'm compelled to admit that I've been a manager for the Glorious Wal-Mart Global Co-Prosperity Sphere/Worker's Paradise for the last decade and a half. I can tell you that the ultra cheap DVD is going to be a major item in the coming years, as we force vendors by stepping on their throats...er, I mean, ask them nicely to sell us movies at ever-cheaper costs. The $5.50 price point already has over 500 titles now and will probably double by the end of 2006, which will certainly include many more Jabootu-worthy titles. The box sets of public domain movies for $5.50 will also expand, which is cool as I have found some real good deals in those, including a 9-movie "Masters of Martial Arts" set last week.
And yes, the $1 public domain DVD rack is mostly crap, but it does get you to stand there and poke through them, right? And the longer you stand there, the more chance there is that you will walk back to electronics and buy a real DVD for $17 instead...
For what it's worth, I've been slowly reviewing some of the $1 DVDs and $5.50 box sets on my site this year.

Yes, here in Chicago, I don't think there is a Wal-Mart in the City limits (They may have just put up one recently -- but whenever they try to put one in, there are protests). I don't have a car, so if there's one twenty miles out in the suburbs, it may as well be on Mars.

Apparently they cycle through the box sets. Now, at the local Wal-Mart they have several seasons of Futurama and the Simpsons, Lost in Space 2.1 and 2.2, Angel, Buffy, Arrested Development 1 and several others...all for $20. Not bad if you don't already own them.
