Due to a surge in forum spam, we unfortunately have to create some hurdles for new members wishing to register and post on this forum.
To get your account approved, follow these instructions exactly:
After you use the 'register' link to create your login, email the forum admin at <forum-admin@ this domain> and request approval.
Your message must include the phrase 'Jabootu forum' in the subject line, and it must include a brief reason why we should think you are a human and not a spam bot, and why we should approve your request.
Send your message from the same email address you used during signup.
You will receive an email confirmation once your account is approved; approvals may take up to several days, since human review will be needed for every request.
Registrations that do not follow these procedures will be ignored. New members posts will be reviewed carefully, and spamming the forum will cause the message and account to be deleted immediately.
We apologize for the inconvenience, but this is a rare forum with many members having participation that spans several years' time. New blood is always welcomed, but if we have to choose, we'd rather keep the quality of the forum high for the people who make the forum what it is than make the signup process idiot-proof and easy for new people. We hope you'll understand and agree.

All things considered, I'm not complaining. And I wouldn't be complaining if I were a new member trying to get on.
Any idea where these clowns are coming from and why they're out in full force lately? Or is that one of the great mysteries, like why the phone always rings when you're in the shower? |

I would imagine that the forum got found by a spider or some other method and once they find you, it's like those beetles the those Mummy movies that eat you alive and stuff. |

I'm actually kinda surprised it took them this long to get around to us. The robot armies have known how to log in and post to Snitz! forums (the apparatus that runs this here forum) for some time now. Jabootu has enough visibility to attract their attention, and Luddites that we are, we haven't implemented neato spam-foiling tricks like CAPTCHA images or other Turing tests -- that would take work, after all.
At any rate, this forum is too good to let it get overrun, so as much as I like to see new people join, I needed a quick, effective mechanism to stem the spam, and I'm afraid this is it for the moment. I have received some better suggestions, though, and I'll be looking into implementing them as soon as I have time.

Those measure aren't any worse than what you would go through to join most forums these days. Although I would like to see the software change- it's a drag not even being able to properly jump to a first unread post in a thread, some smiley and VBcode support and such.

Wow. It looks like I was almost the last real person to get in scott free then. At least I hope you consider me real. :)
I know I'd hate to wait to get approved myself. I don't join forums unless I've decided I really have something to say, but once I decide, I usually want to say it NOW.
But when it comes to spam, what're ya goin' to do? Once they start coming it's like the Night of the Living Dead*. You can whack 'em and whack 'em, but they just keep coming.
(*Which coincidentally I just finished watching all the way through for the first time two days ago.)

| Paul, can't you just ban certain IP addresses? I doubt seriously you'll be getting much Jabootu fan membership from, say, web.de or mail.ru |

Could, but just like CAPTCHAs, that would take programmatic changes. The current workaround was just a quickie administrative change pending me having time to do it better, and for now, it actually does seem to have stopped the SPAM.
On the other hand, if these ideas about going after the spammers financially look like they're going to pan out, we may have to open the gates back up again...
