Hello all
I'm new to this board. I stumbled across this site a few months ago after suffering through Dante's Peak, and finding Ken's review.

Anyway, I saw the most wonderfully awful movie the other day; a German Sherlock Holmes movie starring Christopher Lee. Has anyone else seen it? It's...amazing.

Wasn't Christopher Lee's voice dubbed in that movie?

Here's more information about the film:

Sounds very interesting, although I can't posibly imagine how they could make "Valley of fear" in what sounds like a shoestring budget.

I disagree with some of that review, such as
quote:
Walters is an engaging Watson

He looked like a constipated bulldog half the time. And...
quote:
Sohnker is a perfectly sinister Moriarty

If by sinister the reviewer means 'pompous idiot', then yes, he was sinister.

The movie does have its strengths (few as they are), it's just that 'acting by anybody other than Christopher Lee' is not among them.

Also, wouldn't a movie based on "Valley of Fear" necessitate Holmes being offscreen for most of the film? (The same would also be true of adaptions of other early Holmes tales, such as "A Study in Scarlet" and "Hound of the Baskervilles".)

Noe that you mention it, that's true. Valley of fear is a Holmes mystery only for the few first chapters. The bulk of the novel is a long flashback to show the distant past of the main characters.

I've always though that the best way to film that novel would be to completely ditch the Holmes storyline and adapt just the flashback. It's interesting enough, a sort of early hard boiled novel.

Agree entirely.

There was another earlier film attempt, misleadingly titled The Triumph of Sherlock Holmes starring Arthur Wotner as Holmes and Ian Fleming as Watson. Saw it once years back. Can't say I remember much about it, but it was entertaining enough to inspire me to read the original novella.

This was actually done in essence by Sean Connery in "The Molly Maguires" which is based on the historical facts behind The Valley of Fear.
