| Sorry, but Ghostbusters would've been noticeably diminished without that scene. It also kind of explained why the university would want to fire those guys in the first place, wasting money on goofy experiments. |

I agree. The shocking scene is not critical to the plot but it sets up Venkman's personality and establishes the light touch that sustains the movie. Thus, unlike the scene in Octopussy, this scene is not at all a throwaway.

A throwaway scene would be:
Magnum Force. Dirty Harry wanders into a supermarket and blows away a band of armed robbers. This scene is a throwaway because it happens in the middle of the movie. They already established that Harry is a trigger-happy cop in the first movie, as well as the opening sequence in Magnum Force (the airplane hijacking), so the supermarket shoot-out doesn't provide us with any new information. Nor does it have any connection to the main plot, which concerns a band of vigilante cops. (I'm sure other Dirty Harry sequels were guilty of the same digressions, but this is the scene that comes immediately to mind.)
Superman Returns. The armed robber with the mounted machine gun. This has nothing to do with the main plot, does not involve Lois Lane or Lex Luthor in any way, and is never referred to again.
Remo Williams: The Adventure Begins. The William Hickey boardwalk cameo. It's a cute scene, but somehow I don't see how Joel Grey winning a stuffed bear has anything to do with what else goes on in the film.
Pirates of the Caribbean 2. Captain Sparrow on the cannibal island. Now we're talking about a throwaway sequence. (Of course, I never bothered to see part 3, so I have no idea whether the cannibal island sequence reared its ugly ahead again.)

Batman, the first one directed by Tim Burton. The whole "Vicki's Apartment" scene. It added nothing but running time, and it looked and sounded like the actors made it all up on the spot. Michael Keaton was particularly awful.
I think it was stuck in there because Keaton said, "Guys, I don't have any scenes where I get to act with Jack." |

In "Taxi Driver", DeNiro rails against the pimps, whores and druggies all through the movie. But when he gets his guns and decides to "go out with a bang", he goes after the anti-crime canidate whom he said he ADMIRED AND SUPPORTED! The scene adds nothing, goes nowhere, has no impact on the rest of the movie, and is never mentioned in the movie. Afterward, DeNiro's character runs back to his apartment an does a "what the H*** was I doing?" act, and I had to wonder too.

In the movie, most of the scenes where he rails against the streets aren't so much about the streets. Scorese is making a statement what the streets are doing to Travis. It's about how the poisionous, soul destroying environment bringing out the worst in Travis. None of what he sees is healthy for his psyche. And that is why he spirals downward in to a psychotic rage in the end.
As for the reason he went after the candidate, I think it was revenge. He saw that guy as stealing his girl. |

I thought about that possibility, Capt. Nemo, but it seemed kind of dumb.
I keep remembering a throwaway scene while at work, but by the time I get home to my computer, I've forgotten it.
