The short version? If you like horror/survival genre movies, go watch this movie. You'll like it.
You don't have to read any further than this if you don't want to. Might be some spoilers. Really, just go watch this one.
Saw it last night.
I can honestly think of no criticisms that I can level against this movie, which reminds me a lot of both Salem's Lot and John Carpenter's Ghosts of Mars (which I thought was kind of mediocre).
Well, this movie isn't mediocre.
I liked that all the main characters were adults. Well, one teen, but everybody acted adult and acted much like adults WOULD in a situation where their town was overrun by vampires and most of the residents murdered gruesomely.
Nobody said anything cute or pithy or ironic. Nobody paused just before killing somebody or something to say something "cool" like "Guaranteed to jack you up!" before jabbing them with a hypodermic syringe.
Nobody said anything cool or funny after killing something, like "Death by stereo!" No, this was not The Lost Boys or the 45 minutes in Jeepers Creepers II where we had to suffer through stereotypical teen angst and clique warfare.
The soundtrack was suitable for the movie, but I cannot now remember any of it. Why? Because they didn't contract "Nickelback" or "Stained" or some other horrible grunge wannabe band to do a soundtrack that could also sell a few cds. They didn't have Kanye West do a hip hop riff or flood the movie with Euro-techno dance music.
There weren't any martial arts experts or ex-Special Forces characters. These were just regular people.
And mercy of mercies, they actually let men and women fulfill their gender roles! Men take risks and responsibilities because that is what they are supposed to do in crisis situations. The lead male character actually saves the day here. He saves the female lead character. She doesn't turn into some Sarah Michelle Geller clone and end up killing the villain and outlasting everyone else like in every cliched horror movie they seem to make these days.
Finally, the movie is very grim and dark and bloody. But it isn't the "torture porn" variety of horror Hollywood seems to think we want to watch right now. This was just good old fashioned horror. |
