From the IMDb....

DVDs of early seasons of Sesame Street bear a warning to parents that they may not be appropriate for small children, the New York Times observed today (Monday). Carol-Lynn Parente, executive producer of Sesame Street noted that in the early days of the show, a regular feature was a parody of Masterpiece Theater, featuring Alistair Cookie, played by Cookie Monster, who appeared with a pipe. "That modeled the wrong behavior," Parente observed. Oscar the Grouch appeared too grouchy. "We might not be able to create a character like Oscar now," she said. The Times also noted that in the DVDs (Volumes 1 and 2) Cookie Monster can be seen "in his former inglorious incarnation: a blue, googly-eyed cookievore with a signature gobble ('om nom nom nom')."

A pipe? Inappropriate? And what, exactly, is Cookie's current "incarnation"? Note to Ms. Parente: from what I've seen of the current Sesame Street, I'd much prefer the earlier version.

Yeah, because kids would really want to be "cool" and start smoking big old "Sherlock Holmes" style pipes.

Actually, I don't expect to see pipe smoking last much longer. Probably won't see much of it at all in another 20 years. I don't think it will jump over any generation gaps.

Cigars, on the other hand...

I have also read an artical where some idiots are whining that Cookie has to be shown "eating healthy".
I hate those PC ba****ds. Why? Because they hate anything that might possibly bring a little joy into someone's life.

Whenever things like this come up, I always wonder what makes these people believe children are so stupid that they have to be sheltered and protected from them. I mean, does any kid really think it's okay to shove cookies in his face all the time because Cookie Monster does it, or just talk gibberish? Is Cookie Monster the kind of character the young'ns want to emulate?

The unfortunate answer of course is "yes, there are a few." But I'd argue that those few are the ones that obviouly have to learn things the hard way, and if they have to find lousy role models to choose from, Cookie Monster is pretty benign.

I mean, a "blue, googly-eyed cookievore" is just plain fun to watch. Don't know anybody who wanted to grow up being one, though.

Kinda hard to believe that up until this last century or so, children in most every land and era through history were pretty well mature and self-reliant by the time they were teenagers. I'm sure that had a lot to do with kids not being protected except from the most obvious physical harm.

My grandmother, who decorated cakes for a living, always made us great cakes for birthdays. One year I got a Cookie Monster cake. The only reason I remember it is because the googly eyes were made out of pure icing. I had a sugar rush that was awesome to behold. :-)

Does anyone even watch it anymore? We watched it a few times with our daughter when she was younger and it was absolutely horrid. They kept repeating the same skit every so often and the ideas were bland.

Political correctness forces everything into dullness. Even the youngest children know that. Its no accident that the cartoons from the 1930s and 1940s, the Warner Brothers, MGM and Fleicher Brothers ones are played over and over to this day while modern cartoons are quickly forgotten.

Quite right too. After watching Oscar the Grouch, how many children thought a garbage can was an acceptable place to sleep. (Let alone all those anti-social kids who decided to traumatise their neighbours by painting numbers on their backs).

Ah yes, "the mad painter". He went on to be George Jefferson's neighbor.
As for "living in a garbage can", Top Cat seemed to do pretty well. He'd swipe a bottle of milk and a newspaper from a near-by doorstep and had access to the police call box to make phone calls. He also kept his toothbrush in the police box.

You got that right.
At the beginning of both discs in the Droopy Dog cartoon collection, they use a disclaimer, saying in effect, that "While these cartoons contain racist, sexest and ethnic imagery that is unacceptable today', they would show the toons intact, as "To do other wise would bt to pretend such things never existed".
Yes, thats true, but the fearfull attitude behind this, bothers me.
Do they think Droopy Dog fans don't get that?
Come on people, lighten up!

Everyone gets skewered in those old cartoons. They are merciless and that's what makes them so funny, and timeless. That comment about the Droopy Dog is so self righteous and condescending that it makes me angry just thinking about it.

I watched it when I was young. Does that mean I'm now scarred for life? Can I sue someone?

Oh well, I'm off to youtube to find some of those videos.

So Top Cat was encouraging petty larceny? Disgraceful, ban it immediately.

As an aside, here in Blighty, Top Cat was renamed "Boss Cat" in order to avoid confusion with a brand of cat food. When I say renamed, the them tune still had the 'Top Cat" lyrics and all the characters in the show referred to him as "T.C.", just the introductory title and the tv listings were changed. And of course, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles were renamed 'hero turtles" to protect the young.
