Word is Rhino will re-release MST3K Vol. 10, currently out of print. The not-so-bad news is Godzilla vs. Megalon will not be part of the package. (I thought it was a good episode but the weakest of the set.) The good news is that the reissue will contain The Giant Gila Monster, along with a new interview with Joel, Traces, and Elvis.

The other movies remain Teenage Strangler, Swamp Diamonds, and my fave The Giant Spider Invasion.

Details at MST3K's info site.

Unfortunately for people who bought the first set they aren't making The Giant Gila Monster available separately, so in order to get it I'll have to shell out 50 bucks for a set I already own 3/4 of. It would be nice of them to offer Gila Monster separately for a short time for people who like the program enought to buy the sets when they are first released.

It's not fair, but I'll probably buy it anyway...

Boy, am I glad I got it before the recall.
TGGM is a good choice, but to stick it in with films the fans likely already have....
Not good.

Well, that didn't take long:

"Satellite News has learned that Rhino WILL be offering episode 402- THE GIANT GILA MONSTER as a single disk, in addition to its inclusion in the re-released MST3K Collection Vol. 10. The disk will only be available for a limited time, but for those who purchased the original Vol. 10 before it was recalled, this will save you some hard-earned dough.

"I presume the single-disk version will include the extras that were previously talked about (I doubt they would go to the trouble of mastering a separate release)."

As an aside:

The list provides a pretty good takedown of which MST3K movies are public domain and which aren't, who owns what, and the chances that any one episode might ever see release. (Track of the Moonbeast release seen as "extremely likely". Hey, from his lips to Best Brains' ears.)

I have the first 10 but, I'll probably buy 10.2 anyway, I love all the episodes on 10 and TGGM is one of my faves (I sing, whenever I sing..) from the Joel years. so i can think of a worse way to spend 50 or so bucks

Sister, why would you buy 10.2 now that Rhino has announced they will also release GGM as a separate disk?

I'm happy to hear that Rhino is exercising some brain cells in releasing GGM separately. I have the original Volume 10 but buying 10.2 would be a chore. I'd do it because I'm a fan and GGM is one of the classic episodes, but it would still leave a bad taste in my mouth. I realize Rhino was put in a bad situation here and this is how to satisfy the most people, but still....

Godzilla vs. Megalon was the weakest episode of the set? Say what? The two Godzilla movies they did rank among the best of the lot. Either one is more memorable than all of the other titles on this set combined (well, The Giant Gila Monster does come close).

I mean who can forget the final song? "He eat sushi from a pail?" You can't help but love it.

Anyway, so it seems the Godzilla movie was the stumbling block in the original release. Does anyone know the whole story? How did it get released in the first place? And is there any chance that it will ever get released again? The link above gives Godzilla vs. The Sea Monster a "when hell freezes over" rating, so I suppose the other would be the same. But what I don't know is, why?
