I'm getting Inspector Gadget vibes of this thing.

You know. Who wants to work in Hollywood anymore? With the rancid stuff they having been putting out these days and the scorn that comes with it, why would anyone think a Hollywood career would be worth it?

Oh, I don't know...money?
Anyway, this could be either hit or miss - I'm thinking a lot of eye candy, ala anime, but very little substance. I've always liked John Goodman, though, and I'll look at Christina Ricci any day of the week.

Same here- when they announced this the casting looked good and having the W. Bros as filmmakers seemed like a good bet. They ought to have the right sensibility. But this whole hyper day-glow gamer cut scene look- I don't know if I'm digging that at all. We shall see I suppose. On another note though, this will be HD home theater demo eye candy all the way when it hits home video!

It looks so cartoonish it's actually kind of cute. I don't know if I could stand a whole two hours of it, though. We'd better wait and see, the Wachowski are not dumb.
(Remembers the Matrix sequels)
Alright, not too dumb.

Looks pretty dire to me. The main problem I have with it is that the racing scenes, which look over the top cartoony and not in a good way, seem kind of incongruous with the non-racing scenes, which look like tedious heavy-handed light drama which are meant to be taken seriously. It seems to be a common problem with movies these days- trying to be many things at once and failing at them all.
I hadn't even heard of the old cartoon before this movie came out so at least I don't have to worry about seeing a childhod favourite ruined. |

I saw the cartoon as a kid, when they ran it back in the 60's. It was fun, but certainly not "legendary" ("Astro Boy" was legendary)- so nothing ruined, at least here.

I know it's called SPEED RACER but that trailer looks more like a HOT WHEELS commercial with a much bigger budget.

Man, that's even wilder than I'd imagined it would be. The "Dick Tracy" kind of comic book feel is a bit grating at first, but may just work here. At the very least, I think it's going to be a good nostalgia piece for those of us who grew up watching the series (I used to love it when I was a pre-teen back in the 70's).
The biggest problem I see so far is that it seems to be yet another one of those MTV-generation ADD movies where the camera fails to stay on anything long enough for you to take it in. Hopefully it's mostly just the trailer editing, and they're simply trying not to give away too much too soon. No bets though.
I found myself trying to predict recently how it will play here in Japan, as an Americanized version of a native series, and frankly, I just can't guess. I just showed the above clip to my girlfriend, but sadly she didn't recognize it. She was both a bit young when Mach GoGoGo was popular, and of the wrong demographic, it being a quintessentially male action fantasy. I guess I'll just have to wait until it gets released here to see. |
