That's some brave article. I used to hate the movie on my early teens, found it too slow and that it barely made any sense.
However, I started to discober it had other things to offer as I grew and the film grew in me too. By the time the first director's cut made it to the shelves, it was already my favourite movie ever. Still, I can relate to the feelings the writer experienced. True, BR is a mess, it's full of laughable lines and situations, the narrative is confusing to say the least... yet it somehow works. And don't ask Ridley Scott why it does, because he's been trying to replicate the formula (you know, big themes, muddled plotting, eye candy) for two decades and a half without hitting gold again.
As for the different cuts, look, enough is enough. I still prefer the original, theatrical cut over anything else they may throw at me. Yes, I think the sun drenched final images and the dozing Harrison Ford voiceover actually help the movie. And it's still the only version I own, in full-frame, Spanish dubbed VHS, to add insult to injury.
I may take advantage of the new situation: If I ever see a original-cut only DVD edition at a reasonable prize, I'm buying it. Otherwise, I'd rather get drunk on paint thinner, dip myself in honey and then throw myself over a nest of fire ants than to buy that abomination they sell in a tin case. Five cuts? Who wants them? |

I'm someone who wants the five cuts!!
When I first saw BLADE RUNNER in the theater back in 1982, I was rather disappointed; guess I was expecting something like a combination of THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK, RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK and ALIEN. I thought the thing was kind of slow and lifeless -- One of the things I did like about it was the voice-over; it gave the film an extra bit of "noir" quality. Anyway, when I next saw it on cable, I found that I liked it better (not expecting something different from what it was). When the "Director's Cut" came to the theaters, I eagerly went to see that, and thought it was a masterpiece -- though it's hard to say how the experience would have been if I didn't have the knowledge provided by the voice-over from the previous version; maybe I'd be confused -- that's one reason it's great that the "original" version with narration is now available too.
As for the Slate review -- some interesting points there, but I wonder how Mr. Metcalf's view of the movie has been tainted by his first experience, when the audience LAUGHED throughout (what kind of JERKS do that at a the showing of a new non-comedy?? -- I can understand doing so at a "midnight movie" or B-Fest type showing, where one goes into a movie knowing it's laughable); Maybe in his mind, he wouldn't be "hip" if he doesn't tear down a movie that a certain crowd laughed at.
